uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֤י

and,stretch_out

God says this will be a result of the king of Egypt’s stubbornness. Alternate translation: “Therefore, I will send out”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֤י אֶת־יָדִי֙

and,stretch_out DOM hand,my

Here, hand refers to God’s power. Alternate translation: “I will use my strength”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מִצְרַ֔יִם

Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

Egypt refers to both the land and the people group, and then, by extension, to Pharaoh as well.

מִצְרַ֔יִם & בְּקִרְבּ֑וֹ

Miʦrayim/(Egypt) & in/on/at/with,midst,it

Here, him refers to Egypt as a collective.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

נִפְלְאֹתַ֔י

wonders,my

If your language does not use an abstract noun for this idea, you can express the idea behind the abstract noun wonders in another way. Alternate translation: “my amazing acts”

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵ֖ן

and=after so

Here the sequential nature of these happenings is emphasized. Consider using a stronger sequential connective term than usual here.

Note 6 topic: writing-pronouns

יְשַׁלַּ֥ח

let_~_go

Here, he refers to the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

אֶתְכֶֽם

DOM,you_all

Here, you refers to the Israelites. If your language uses different forms of “you” depending on the number of people addressed, use a plural form here.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:13-22 Moses’ second protest was that he had inadequate knowledge. He did not know God’s name. This might mean that God’s personal name had not yet been revealed (see study notes on 6:2-3). It is also possible that Moses meant he did not know the secret, magic formula that a man of power might have been expected to make use of. Interest in such things was common in the ancient Near East. God’s direct response is almost a riddle, but the majority of his answer is a statement of his faithfulness in the past and a demonstration of his knowledge of the future. There is nothing magical about the name Yahweh. Knowledge of secret formulas and magic powers is not the issue; the issue is the character of God and his lordship of history. The reason there is “something about that name” is because of the incomparable character and nature of the one who bears it.
