15:7 The Hebrew says forty years, but this is interpreted here as a scribal error. (David’s entire reign was only forty years, see 1 Kings 2:11.)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

(Occurrence 0) It came about

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was from_the=end/extremity forty year and=he/it_said ʼAⱱīshālōm to/towards the=king go please and,pay DOM vow,my which/who made to/for=YHWH in/on/at/with,Hebron )

This phrase is used to introduce the next event in the story line.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) at the end of four years that Absalom

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was from_the=end/extremity forty year and=he/it_said ʼAⱱīshālōm to/towards the=king go please and,pay DOM vow,my which/who made to/for=YHWH in/on/at/with,Hebron )

This refers to four years after he returned to Jerusalem. Alternate translation: “fours years after Absalom had returned to Jerusalem, he”

(Occurrence 0) and pay a vow that I have made to Yahweh in Hebron

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was from_the=end/extremity forty year and=he/it_said ʼAⱱīshālōm to/towards the=king go please and,pay DOM vow,my which/who made to/for=YHWH in/on/at/with,Hebron )

Alternate translation: “to Hebron and there fulfill a vow that I have made to Yahweh”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:7 After four years: Hebrew reads forty years, which would put Absalom’s uprising in David’s last year as king and create many chronological difficulties with events that happened afterward (also see study note on 15:1-19). The Greek and Syriac reading is much more likely.
• fulfill a vow: Unlike the freewill offering of devotion and gratitude that a worshiper promised to God, this type of offering was to fulfill a promise to God (see Gen 28:20-22; Judg 11:30-31; 1 Sam 1:11). Absalom was probably lying (cp. 1 Sam 20:28-29).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
