uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-participants

אִתַּ֣י הַגִּתִּ֔י

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king to/towards ʼIttay the,Gittite to/for=what you(ms)_will_walk also/yet you(ms) with,us go_back and,dwell with the=king that/for/because/then/when foreigner you(ms) and=also exile you(ms) to,place_of,your )

The author does not formally introduce Ittai the Gittite as a participant in the story, even though he later has an important role in it. The next verse provides some further information about him, but if it would be helpful to your readers, you could introduce him in more detail here. The UST models one way to do that.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

לָ֧מָּה תֵלֵ֛ךְ גַּם־אַתָּ֖ה אִתָּ֑נוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king to/towards ʼIttay the,Gittite to/for=what you(ms)_will_walk also/yet you(ms) with,us go_back and,dwell with the=king that/for/because/then/when foreigner you(ms) and=also exile you(ms) to,place_of,your )

David is using the question form to tell Ittai the Gittite not to go with him. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [You should not be going with us!]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / go

תֵלֵ֛ךְ גַּם־אַתָּ֖ה

you(ms)_will_walk (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king to/towards ʼIttay the,Gittite to/for=what you(ms)_will_walk also/yet you(ms) with,us go_back and,dwell with the=king that/for/because/then/when foreigner you(ms) and=also exile you(ms) to,place_of,your )

In a context such as this, your language might say “coming” instead of going. Alternate translation: [are you also coming]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

שׁ֣וּב וְשֵׁ֤ב עִם־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ כִּֽי־נָכְרִ֣י אַ֔תָּה וְגַם־גֹּלֶ֥ה אַתָּ֖ה לִמְקוֹמֶֽךָ

go_back (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king to/towards ʼIttay the,Gittite to/for=what you(ms)_will_walk also/yet you(ms) with,us go_back and,dwell with the=king that/for/because/then/when foreigner you(ms) and=also exile you(ms) to,place_of,your )

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Since you are a foreigner and you are also an exile to your place, return and dwell with the king]
