ULTAnd he took his son, the firstborn who would be king in his place, and he lifted him up as a burnt offering on the wall, and great wrath was against Israel. And they departed away from him, and they returned to the land.

USTThen the king of Moab took his oldest son, who would have become the next king, and killed him and offered him as a sacrifice to their god Chemosh, burning him on top of the city wall. Then God became very angry at the Israelite army, so the army left and went back to their own land.

3:27 Whether this was great anger displayed by the Moabites against the Israelites, or whether such a horrific act made the Israelites very angry is debated. It seems more likely that such a gruesome human sacrifice was so offensive, even to the Israelites in their lax spiritual state, that they simply left.
