TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:13 a nobody like me: Literally a dog. As scavengers, dogs were held in low esteem in the ancient Near East. King Shalmaneser III of Assyria observed in his annals, “Hazael, son of a nobody, seized the throne.”

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Who is your servant, that he should do this great thing?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩₐzāʼēl that/for/because/then/when what servant,your the,dog that/for/because/then/when he/it_made/did the,thing the,great the=this and=he/it_said ʼElīshāˊ shown,me YHWH DOM,you king on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in ʼArām )

Hazel refers to himself here as Elisha’s servant. Hazel uses this rhetorical question to emphasize that he does not think he could do the terrible things that Elisha has said. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “I could never do such great things!” or “Who am I, that I would have the power to do such things?”

(Occurrence 0) this great thing

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩₐzāʼēl that/for/because/then/when what servant,your the,dog that/for/because/then/when he/it_made/did the,thing the,great the=this and=he/it_said ʼElīshāˊ shown,me YHWH DOM,you king on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in ʼArām )

“this terrible thing.” Here the word “great” refers to something that has a large effect and is terrible.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) He is only a dog

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩₐzāʼēl that/for/because/then/when what servant,your the,dog that/for/because/then/when he/it_made/did the,thing the,great the=this and=he/it_said ʼElīshāˊ shown,me YHWH DOM,you king on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in ʼArām )

Hazael is talking about himself. He speaks of his low status and lack of influence by comparing himself to a dog. Here a dog represents a lowly animal. Alternate translation: “I am as powerless as a dog” or “I am as powerless as a lowly animal”
