Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. 3:40-51 There were 273 more firstborn sons in Israel (in the non-Levite tribes) than there were Levite males (cp. 3:39). Because the Levites served as substitutes for the firstborn of Israel (3:41; see study note on 3:11-13), a redemption price (3:48) of five pieces of silver (3:47) had to be paid for each of the extra firstborn sons (3:46; cp. Lev 27:6). It is not clear who covered this cost. This provision for a special class of substitutes points to Christ’s role as a substitute; through his death, Christ paid the redemption price for all humanity (see Mark 10:45; Gal 3:13; Eph 1:7; Heb 9:15).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative
וְנָתַתָּ֣ה
and=you(ms)_will_give
In this verse, shall indicates a command. See how you translated the same use of shall in 1:3.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
הָעֹדְפִ֖ים בָּהֶֽם
the,excess_number in/on/at/with,them
This phrase refers to the 273 firstborn male Israelites mentioned in 3:46. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “the 273 in excess among the firstborn Israelite males”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks
בָּהֶֽם
in/on/at/with,them
The direct speech that began in 3:45 ends at the end of this verse. Consider natural ways of ending direct quotations in your language.
