Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

Paragraph 26:23–26

These verses are warnings against evil people who deceive others with their words. They say nice things to conceal their true intentions to harm others.

Verse 23 gives an introductory example of this kind of deception. Verses 24–25 give more details about a particular deceiver along with a warning not to believe him. Verse 26 assures the reader that this person’s wickedness will eventually become known.

This verse contrasts the enemy’s attempts to conceal his hatred with the eventual public exposure of his wickedness. Notice that the underlined parts are similar in meaning. The parts in bold print contrast.

Though his hatred is concealed by deception: In Hebrew, this clause is more literally “Hatred covers itself with deception.” In this context, it means that the enemy hides his hatred by using words that deceive or trick the other person.

is concealed: In Hebrew, this verb has almost the same meaning as “disguises” in 26:24a.

his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly: This line indicates that the enemy’s wicked plans will become known to a large number of people.

in the assembly: These words probably refer to an informal gathering of people or to a large number of people in general.Waltke (page 365) and Cohen (page 178) think that the phrase “in the assembly” refers to a legal assembly that meets to judge the wrongdoer. Fox (page 800) translates this phrase with the words “in public.” He sees no need to understand a formal gathering of any kind. Hubbard, Garrett, and McKane all agree that this phrase refers to society in general.

Some other ways to translate this line are:

their wrongdoing will be exposed in public (NLT)

but his wickedness will be revealed to the community (GW)

but everyone will see the evil things he does (GNT)

In some languages, it may be more natural to express the contrast between these two lines in a different way. For example:

Here Solomon refers to Hatred being concealed as if it were an object that is covered, and he refers to evil being revealed as if it were an object that is uncovered. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. See how you translated the same use of “covers” in [10:6](../10/06.md). Alternate translation: “is concealed … will be revealed”
