This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.
The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.
In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.
The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

It is implied by the parallelism that an oppressive ruler will not enjoy a long life. It is also implied that a ruler who hates unjust gain has good understanding.

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), along with most versions and scholars.
leader: The word leader can refer here to any high official or leader.
judgment: In Hebrew, this word refers to a person’s good sense or competence. See understanding (good sense) in the Glossary.
a great oppressor: In Hebrew, this phrase is more literally “great of oppression/extortion” or a great oppressor, as in the BSB.See BART and footnote (a) in the NET. Most versions translate this Hebrew word with a word such as “oppress,” oppressor,” or “oppression.” Most lexicons gloss the word as “extortion” or “exploitation.” It refers to a person who severely oppresses the people under his rule. He may do this in many ways, including making them work as slaves, taking their land, or taxing them unfairly.See NIDOTTE (H5131) for further discussion of common types of oppression and extortion. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

but he who hates dishonest profit: This phrase refers to someone who hates or rejects wealth that is gained dishonestly or unfairly. He refuses to tolerate or accept it. Some ways to translate this phrase are:
but those who hate unjust gain (GW)
but one who hates corruption (NLT)
but anyone who refuses to get rich by cheating others (CEV)
will prolong his days: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates literally as will prolong his days can be interpreted in two ways:
It refers to a long life. For example:
will live long (NJPS)
will have a long life (NLT) (CEV, GW, NIV, NJPS, NLT, NRSV, REB)
It refers to a long rule. For example:
will rule a long time (NCV) (NCV, NIV11, GNT)
Versions that translate the phrase literally, including the BSB and several other English versions (ESV, NASB, NET), could be referring to either the days of a leader’s life or the days of his rule. If you have a phrase in your language that can be interpreted either way, you may use it. If you need to choose one interpretation, it is recommended that you choose interpretation (1).
