uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Ἅννας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς, καὶ Καϊάφας

Annas the chief_priest and Caiaphas

Luke describes Annas as the high priest, but the actual situation was complicated. At this time the Romans were appointing the high priests for Judea. One Roman official had appointed Annas some years earlier, but ten years after that, another official deposed him and named his son-in-law Caiaphas high priest instead. However, the Jews still recognized Annas’ claim to the position. If you decide to clarify this for your readers, it would probably be best to state the matter as simply as possible. Alternate translation: “Annas, whom the Jews recognized as the high priest, and Caiaphas, whom a Roman official had appointed as the high priest”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Ἅννας & Καϊάφας & Ἰωάννης & Ἀλέξανδρος

Annas & Caiaphas & John & Alexander

These are the names of four men. The John mentioned here was a member of the high priest’s family. This is not the same John as the apostle.

ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους ἀρχιερατικοῦ

as_many_as were of descent chief_priestly

Alternate translation: “all the other members of the high priestly family who were members of the council”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:1-22 Persecution was a common experience of God’s people throughout the Bible. God’s servants often faced hostility and opposition (Deut 30:7; 1 Kgs 18:13; Neh 4:1-3; Jer 37–38; Matt 23:34-37; Luke 11:49-51; 1 Thes 2:14-15). Jesus himself was persecuted (Luke 4:29; John 5:16), and he told his disciples to expect the same kind of treatment (Matt 10:23; 24:9; Mark 13:9; Luke 21:12; John 16:2), but he promised that the Holy Spirit would provide strength (Acts 1:8; Luke 12:11-12; 21:15). Acts records frequent times of persecution (Acts 4:3; 5:17-41; 7:54–8:3; 9:1-2; 11:19; 12:2; 13:50; 14:19; 16:19-24), but Acts also reiterates that the Holy Spirit empowers disciples to bear witness in such circumstances (2:44; 4:8-13; 6:10; 7:55). The boldness of Peter and John before the hostile high council exemplifies facing persecution with courage and power (4:20).

OET (OET-LV)and Annas the chief_priest, and Kaiafas, and Yōannaʸs, and Alexandros, and as_many_as were of chief_priestly descent.

OET (OET-RV) along with those descended from high priests, including Annas the current high priest and Caiaphas and Yohan and Alexander.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
