OET (OET-LV) Like_this is_it the_fast choose_him a_day_of to_humble anyone self_of_him to_bow like_reed his/its_head and_sackcloth and_ashes he_spreads_as_a_bed to_this do_you_call a_fast and_day_of acceptance to/for_YHWH.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) Is this really the kind of fast that I would want … under himself?
(Some words not found in UHB: ?,like,this will_belong fast choose,him day humble humankind self_of,him ?,to,bow like,reed his/its=head and,sackcloth and,ashes lie_in ?,to,this call fast and,day_of acceptable to/for=YHWH )
Yahweh uses a question to scold the people. They act like they are humble before God, but they are hurting other people. Alternate translation: “This is not the kind of fast I want … under himself.”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile
(Occurrence 0) A day for anybody to humble himself, for him to bow down his head like a reed
(Some words not found in UHB: ?,like,this will_belong fast choose,him day humble humankind self_of,him ?,to,bow like,reed his/its=head and,sackcloth and,ashes lie_in ?,to,this call fast and,day_of acceptable to/for=YHWH )
This means the person is bowing down, but he is not truly humble. “A reed” represents a weak plant that bends easily.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) Do you really call this a fast, a day that pleases Yahweh?
(Some words not found in UHB: ?,like,this will_belong fast choose,him day humble humankind self_of,him ?,to,bow like,reed his/its=head and,sackcloth and,ashes lie_in ?,to,this call fast and,day_of acceptable to/for=YHWH )
Yahweh uses a question to scold the people. Alternate translation: “Surely you do not think this kind of fast pleases me!”
58:5 This is a satirical portrayal of the people’s fasting as mere external piety without repentance and righteous acts. Ritualistic and insincere fasting is nothing but pomp.
• Wearing burlap and ashes are expressions of sorrow and mourning.
• please the Lord? The people erroneously believed that the Lord would bless them, if only they performed the right rituals.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
