uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

(Occurrence 0) The wilderness and the Arabah will be glad; and the desert will rejoice

(Some words not found in UHB: glad, wilderness and,dry_land and, rejoice wilderness and, blossom like, crocus )

These two phrases have basically the same meaning. These places are described as being glad, like a person is glad, because they have received water and are blossoming. Alternate translation: “It will be like the wilderness and the Arabah are glad and the desert will rejoice” (See also: figs-parallelism)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) blossom

(Some words not found in UHB: glad, wilderness and,dry_land and, rejoice wilderness and, blossom like, crocus )

This speaks of the plants in the desert blossoming as if the desert itself were blossoming. Alternate translation: “its plants will blossom”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

35:1 God’s land would become like a wasteland, spiritually desolate and physically depleted. However, God would turn the desert into a garden (see also 32:15), taking his people from exile to glory.
