OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said the_king of_the_people of_ˊAmmōn to the_messengers of_Yiftāḩ if/because it_took Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) DOM land_my in/on/at/with_came_up_they from_Miʦrayim/(Egypt) from_ʼArnōn and_unto the_Yaboq/(Jabbok) and_unto the_Yardēn/(Jordan) and_now restore DOM_it in/on/at/with_peace.

OET (OET-RV)The Ammonite king responded to Yiftah’s messengers, “Because the Israelis seized my land when they came out of Egypt. It went from the Arnon river up to the Yabbok river, and over to the Yordan river. Now return the land peaceably.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

כִּֽי־לָקַ֨ח יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶת־אַרְצִי֙

that/for/because/then/when he/it_had_taken Yisrael DOM land,my

The Ammonite king is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “I have come against you to fight because Israel took my land”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

מֵאַרְנ֥וֹן & הַיַּבֹּ֖ק

from,Arnon & the,Jabbok

The words Arnon and Jabbok are the names of rivers.

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

אֶתְהֶ֖ן

DOM,it

The Ammonite king is using the plural pronoun them to refer to the areas bounded by the rivers he names. However, since he uses the singular term land to describe this entire territory, it may be more natural in your language to use a singular pronoun. Alternate translation: “it”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בְּשָׁלֽוֹם

in/on/at/with,peace

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of peace, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “peacefully”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:12-28 Jephthah initially tried to solve the problem by diplomatic rather than military means (cp. Deut 20:10-11).
• Unlike the nomadic, marauding Midianites of Gideon’s day, the Ammonites were a settled tribe whose territory lay to the east of Israel’s holdings in Transjordan (east of the Jordan); Rabbah was the Ammonite capital. The Ammonites, like the Moabites (both descendants of Lot) and the Edomites (Esau’s descendants), were to be left alone, as their territories were assigned to them by the Lord (Deut 2:16-23).
• Contrary to the Ammonite king’s contention, the Amorites, not Ammon or Moab, lived between the Arnon and Jabbok rivers at the time of the conquest. In response to Sihon’s refusal to let Israel pass, the Lord had given the land of the Amorite kings Sihon and Og to Israel. The Ammonite king had no legitimate quarrel with Israel.
