OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said to_him/it Gidˊōn pardon_me my_master and_is YHWH with_us and_for_what happened_us all this and_where [are]_all wonders_his which they_recounted to/for_us fathers_our to_say not from_Miʦrayim/(Egypt) bring_up_us YHWH and_now abandoned_us YHWH and_given_us in/on/at/with_hand of_Midyān.

OET (OET-RV)“With me, my master?” Gideon asked. “If Yahweh is with us, then why’s all of this happened to us? Where are all of the miracles that our ancestors told us about, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has forsaken us and handed us over to the Midianites.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

please my=master and,is YHWH with,us and=for=what? happened,us all/each/any/every this(f) and,where all wonders,his which/who told to/for=us fathers,our to=say ?,not from=Miʦrayim/(Egypt) bring_~_up,us YHWH

Gideon and the ancestors whom he is quoting are using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate these questions as statements or as exclamations. Alternate translation: “Excuse me, my lord, but if Yahweh is with us, then all of this should not have happened to us! We should be seeing the same kind of wonders that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Yahweh brought us up from Egypt!’”

Note 2 topic: writing-politeness

בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י

please my=master

Gideon is politely asking permission to address a superior and referring to the angel by a respectful title. In your translation, use comparable forms for these purposes in your own language.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

עִמָּ֔נוּ & מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ & לָ֨נוּ & הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ & וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ

with,us & happened,us & to/for=us & bring_~_up,us & and,given,us

In each of these instances, by us, Gideon means himself and others in his situation but not the angel of Yahweh, to whom he is speaking. So use the exclusive form of that word in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ

fathers,our

Gideon is using the term fathers to mean “ancestors.” If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “our ancestors”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלֹ֤א מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם֙ הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה

to=say ?,not from=Miʦrayim/(Egypt) bring_~_up,us YHWH

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: “when they told us how Yahweh brought us up from Egypt”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ בְּכַף־מִדְיָֽן

and,given,us in/on/at/with,hand Midyān

Here the term palm, like the term “hand” elsewhere in the book, represents the power of a person or group. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and given the Midianites power over us”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:11-32 Gideon encountered the angel of the Lord and emerged as a hero. He overthrew the syncretistic Baal cult of his family and town and called his people to fight in the Lord’s name.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
