The author is using the term house by association to mean a group of people who were living together, not necessarily all in the same building. Here the masculine term men has a generic sense that includes both men and women. While the males in the city were the most likely to attack Gideon for tearing down the altar of Baal, he probably feared any person—man or woman, adult or child—who would recognize him and identify him as the person who had done that.
