OET (OET-LV) But the Yaʸsous having_known the speculations of_them, answering said to them:
Why you_all_are_reasoning in the hearts of_you_all?
OET (OET-RV) But Yeshua knew what they were thinking and saying, and answered them, “Why are you reasoning about this in your minds?
In this section, Luke focused on Jesus’ authority. Jesus used his authority from God to forgive the paralyzed man’s sins. The religious leaders questioned that authority. Jesus proved his authority to forgive sin when he healed the paralyzed man.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus showed that he had authority to forgive sins
Jesus forgave the sins of a paralyzed man and healed him
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:1–8 and Mark 2:1–12.
Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied,
Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked,
But Jesus understood what they were thinking, and he said,
Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied: In Greek, this clause begins with a conjunction that indicates a contrast. This contrast is between what the teachers of the law thought about Jesus and what Jesus knew about himself and his authority.
Some English versions translate this conjunction as “but.” For example:
But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said (NCV)
Other English versions do not use a conjunction here (BSB, NIV, GNT). Connect these verses in a way that is natural in your language.
“Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
“Why are you(plur) thinking like that?
“You are wrong to think these things!
Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?: This is a rhetorical question. Jesus used this rhetorical question to rebuke the religious leaders. Jesus did have authority to forgive sins. So he told them that they were wrong to think that he was blaspheming.
Some ways to translate this rebuke are:
As a rhetorical question. For example:
Why are you thinking these things? (NCV)
Why do you think this is blasphemy? (NLT96)
As a statement or command. For example:
You are mistaken/wrong to think these things.
Do not think like that!
thinking these things in your hearts: In some languages it may sound unnatural to say that people are thinking in their hearts. You may have a different body part or expression to describe where someone thinks. Or the word you use for thinking may already imply that this takes place within a person. In this case you could just say:
Why are you thinking these things? (NCV)

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπιγνούς Δέ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τούς διαλογισμούς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν)
This phrase indicates that they were reasoning silently, so the implication is that Jesus sensed what they were thinking. Alternate translation: [sensing what they were thinking]

Together the words answering and said mean that Jesus responded to what the religious leaders were thinking. Alternate translation: [responded to them]

Jesus does not expect the religious leaders to explain why they are thinking these things. Instead, he is using the question form to emphasize that they should not be thinking them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or exclamation. Alternate translation: [You should not be thinking these things!]

The term hearts represents the thoughts of these people. Alternate translation: [are you thinking these things]
