OET (OET-LV) And immediately having_stood_up before them, having_taken_up on which he_was_lying, he_went_away to the home of_him glorifying the god.
OET (OET-RV) Immediately the man stood up, right there in front of them all, picked up what he’d been lying on, and headed off to his home praising God.
In this section, Luke focused on Jesus’ authority. Jesus used his authority from God to forgive the paralyzed man’s sins. The religious leaders questioned that authority. Jesus proved his authority to forgive sin when he healed the paralyzed man.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus showed that he had authority to forgive sins
Jesus forgave the sins of a paralyzed man and healed him
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 9:1–8 and Mark 2:1–12.
And immediately the man stood up before them,
¶ And immediately, as everyone watched, the man jumped up, (NLT)
¶ At once the man stood up before them, (NCV)
¶ At once the man stood up in front of everyone. (CEV)
And immediately: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as And immediately is literally “And at once.” It introduces what happened when Jesus spoke to the man. As soon as Jesus spoke, the man was healed. This was proof of Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. Use a natural way in your language to begin this verse.
the man stood up before them: The phrase before them means “in the sight/presence of the crowd” or “while everyone was watching.” Some other ways to translate this are:
the man stood up in front of everyone (CEV)
as everyone watched, the man jumped up (NLT)
took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.
picked up his mat, and went home praising God. (NLT)
He picked up his mat and went home, giving thanks to God. (CEV)
took what he had been lying on: The phrase took what he had been lying on means “picked up his mat.” For example:
He picked up his mat (CEV)
You may use the same word as you used in 5:24c for “mat.” The reader should understand that it is referring to the same item.
glorifying God: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as glorifying God means to speak about how wonderful and excellent someone or something is. The man thanked and praised God that he could now walk. Other ways to translate this are:
praising God (NIV)
giving thanks to God (CEV)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀναστὰς
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί παραχρῆμα ἀναστάς ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἄρας ἐφʼ ὅ κατέκειτο ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τόν οἶκον αὐτοῦ δοξάζων τόν Θεόν)
The implication is that the man was able to get up because Jesus had healed him. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [And all at once the man was healed, so he got up]
ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν
before them
Here, the term before means “in front of.” Alternate translation: [in front of everyone] or [where everyone could see him]
5:17-26 The healing of the paralyzed man initiated the conflicts Jesus had with religious leaders throughout his public ministry until he was crucified in Jerusalem.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
