OET (OET-LV)And not having_found by_what way they_may_carry_ him _in because_of the crowd, having_gone_up on the housetop, they_let_ him _down through the tiles with the stretcher into the midst before the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).

OET (OET-RV)but because of the crowd they couldn’t find a way in. So instead, they went up the stairs to the flat roof and removed some tiles in order to let the stretcher down right in front of Yeshua.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ποίας εἰσενέγκωσιν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸν ὄχλον

and not /having/_found ˱by˲_what_‹way› ˱they˲_/may/_carry_in him because_of the crowd

If it would be helpful in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the action that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: “But because the crowd of people had filled the house, they could not find a way to bring the man inside”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

διὰ τὸν ὄχλον

because_of the crowd

The implication is that they could not enter because the crowd was so large that there was no room for them. Alternate translation: “because the crowd of people had filled the house”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀναβάντες ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα

/having/_gone_up on the housetop

In this culture, houses had flat roofs, and many houses had a staircase outside that provided access to the housetop. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: “they went up the outside staircase onto the flat roof of the house”

καθῆκαν αὐτὸν

˱they˲_let_down him

Alternate translation: “and lowered the man down”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

εἰς τὸ μέσον

into the midst

Luke is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need to be complete. Alternate translation: “into the midst of the people”

ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

before ¬the Jesus

Here, the term before means “in front of.” Alternate translation: “in front of Jesus” or “where Jesus could see him”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:19 took off some tiles: Palestinian roofs were normally made of wooden beams covered with reeds and mud or clay. Either this roof had tiles, or else Luke was interpreting the episode for his Greek readers (cp. Mark 2:4, which speaks of digging through the roof).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
