OET (OET-LV)And when he_ceased speaking, he_said to the Simōn:
Set_out into the depth and lower the nets of_you_all for a_catch.

OET (OET-RV)Once he’d finished his speaking, he told Simon, “Go out to the deeper parts and lower your nets to catch some fish.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–11: Simon and some other fishermen became disciples of Jesus

In this section, Simon Peter and some of his fishing companions heard Jesus teach. They saw his power revealed through a miraculous catch of fish. As a result, they left their fishing work and began following Jesus as his disciples.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus called Simon and other fishermen to become his disciples

Jesus’ first disciples

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 4:18–22 and Mark 1:16–20.

5:4a

When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon,

5:4b

“Put out into deep water

5:4a–b

Put out into deep water: The phrase Put out into deep water here means “Move (either by sailing or rowing) your boat into deep water.” That is, Jesus told Simon to move the boat farther away from the shore.

Some other ways to translate this are:

Sail/Row(sing) out to where the water is deeper

Go(sing) farther away from the shore into the deeper wate

Simon, cause/make(sing) the boat to go to the deep water

5:4c

and let down your nets for a catch.”

let down your nets: The verb let down describes the action of putting nets into the water. In some cultures, fishermen “throw” or “cast” their nets into the water. Use the most natural verb in your language for this action.

The command let down is a plural form. It shows that there were other men in the boat helping Simon Peter.

for a catch: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as for a catch here means “in order to catch some fish.”

Different languages have different expressions for “catching” fish. For example:

take/get fish

kill fish

hunt fish

trap fish

Use the most natural expression in your language for fishing.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν

when (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὡς Δέ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν εἶπεν πρός τόν Σίμωνα Ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τό βάθος καί χαλάσατε τά δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν)

The implication is that Jesus had been speaking in order to teach the people. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [When Jesus had finished teaching the people]
