OET (OET-LV)Then they_spat in the face of_him, and they_beat him and they slapped him

OET (OET-RV)Then they spat in Yeshua’s face and they beat him and slapped him

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ

˱they˲_spat in the face ˱of˲_him

In Jesus’ culture, people would spit in someone’s face to insult that person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could explain what this action means. Alternate translation: “they spit in his face to dishonor him”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐνέπτυσαν & οἱ

˱they˲_spat & they

Here, the pronouns they and they refer to people who were there. Matthew may be referring to some members of the Jewish council, some of the people that Peter was sitting with, and other people who were in or near the house of the high priest. If possible use a general word or phrase that refers to some of the people who were there. Alternate translation: “some people spit … they” or “some of those present spit … they”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

26:57-68 This hearing might have been little more than an unofficial preliminary hearing designed to establish consensus on the terms of the charges. The Jewish leaders were under considerable pressure to keep this incident secret, lest their actions cause a riot (see 21:26, 46; 26:5, 55; John 11:45-53).
