SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:23–34: Here are more sayings of wise people

The first verse (24:23a) indicates that this section is an additional list of sayings of wise people. This list has been added to the preceding section (22:17–24:22). The sayings range from one to five verses. Each saying will be marked as a separate paragraph in the Notes. As in the English versions, the sayings in this section will not be numbered.

Three of the sayings (24:23b–25, 24:26, and 24:30–34) are general principles. They are not addressed specifically to the readers. See the notes on 10:2 for ways to translate this kind of proverb.

In the other two sayings (24:27 and 24:28–29), the author uses second person commands and pronouns (you(sing)). Unlike the preceding section, he does not use the phrase “my son” explicitly in these commands.

Some other headings for this section are:

More Wise Sayings (GNT)

More Sayings of the Wise (ESV)

These Are Further Words of Wise People

Paragraph 24:28–29

The overall meaning of this saying is that a witness should not testify falsely against another person in order to get revenge.

24:29

Notice that the parallel statements within the quotation marks are almost identical in meaning:

29aDo not say, “I’ll do to him as he has done to me;

29bI’ll pay that man back for what he did.”

In the context of 24:28, this verse implies that the “neighbor” had previously done something bad to the potential witness. The witness now has the chance to get revenge by giving false or misleading testimony that would harm his neighbor.Fox (page 773).

24:29a–b

(combined/reordered)

Do not say: The word say probably indicates that the witness says the following words to himself. He thinks the words in his own mind. It could indicate that he speaks the words aloud to other people, but he would probably not do this in the court. Be careful not to imply that the parallel statements in this verse are part of his testimony in court. Some other ways to translate this command are:

Do not say/think to yourself, “…

Do not say in your own thoughts/mind, “…

Do not plan to…

“I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work.”: These two statements have almost the same meaning. Another way to translate them is:

“I will do to my neighbor just as he did to me. Now I will get revenge.

You may be able to use an idiom for one of the statements to avoid redundancy. For example:

“I’ll get even with them!” (GNT)

General Comment on 24:29a–b

The two statements in these lines are direct quotes. In some languages, it may be more natural to translate one or both of the statements as indirect speech. For example, verse 29a (below) is direct speech. Verse 29b is indirect speech:

29aDo not say to yourself, “I will do something to repay that person for the way he harmed me in the past.”

29bDo not plan to get revenge.

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine the parallel statements into one statement. See 24:29a–b (combined/reordered) in the Display.

24:29a

Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me;

24:29b

I will repay the man according to his work.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

אַל־תֹּאמַ֗ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָֽשָׂה־לִ֭י כֵּ֤ן אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לּ֑וֹ אָשִׁ֖יב לָאִ֣ישׁ כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ

not say just=as he/it_had_made to=me yes/correct/thus/so do for=him/it pay_~_back to,person according,to_of,his_deed

If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this as an indirect quotation. Alternate translation: “Do not say that you will do to him just as he did to you, or that you will return to the man according to his deed”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

עָֽשָׂה & לּ֑וֹ & לָאִ֣ישׁ כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ

he/it_had_made & for=him/it & to,person according,to_of,his_deed

Although he, him, the man, and his are masculine, the writer is using these words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use phrases that make this clear. Alternate translation: “a person did … to that person … to that person according to that person’s deed”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

עָֽשָׂה & אֶֽעֱשֶׂה & כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ

he/it_had_made & do & according,to_of,his_deed

The speaker implies that this deed was something bad or harmful to the person speaking. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “he did something bad … I will do something bad … according to his bad deed”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

24:23-34 This addendum to the thirty sayings of the wise (22:17–24:22) includes five further sayings.
