OET (OET-LV)And_ Shāʼūl _hurled DOM the_spear and_he/it_said I_will_strike in/on/at/with_Dāvid and_in/on/at/with_wall and_ Dāvid _eluded from_presence_of_him two_times.

OET (OET-RV)and he suddenly hurled it, saying, “I’ll pin that David to the wall.” But twice when he did that, David managed to elude him.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / events

וַיָּ֤טֶל שָׁאוּל֙ אֶֽת־הַחֲנִ֔ית וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אַכֶּ֥ה בְדָוִ֖ד וּבַקִּ֑יר

and,hurled Shāʼūl DOM the,spear and=he/it_said pin in/on/at/with,David and,in/on/at/with,wall

The author is describing one event before describing another event that preceded it. In your translation, you may wish to relate these events in the order in which they happened. Alternate translation: [And Saul said, “I will strike David, and into the wall!” and he hurled the spear]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וּבַקִּ֑יר

and,in/on/at/with,wall

Saul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and the spear will drive him into the wall]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וַיִּסֹּ֥ב & מִפָּנָ֖יו

and,eluded & from,presence_of,him

The author is using one part of Saul, his face, to mean all of him in the act of trying to kill David. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [avoided him]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:11 In his jealousy and fear, Saul would have been happier with one dead David than with thousands of dead Philistines (18:7).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
