MSG(12-18)God appeared to Solomon that very night and said, “I accept your prayer; yes, I have chosen this place as a temple for sacrifice, a house of worship. If I ever shut off the supply of rain from the skies or order the locusts to eat the crops or send a plague on my people, and my people, my God-defined people, respond by humbling themselves, praying, seeking my presence, and turning their backs on their wicked lives, I’ll be there ready for you: I’ll listen from heaven, forgive their sins, and restore their land to health. From now on I’m alert day and night to the prayers offered at this place. Believe me, I’ve chosen and sanctified this Temple that you have built: My Name is stamped on it forever; my eyes are on it and my heart in it always. As for you, if you live in my presence as your father David lived, pure in heart and action, living the life I’ve set out for you, attentively obedient to my guidance and judgments, then I’ll back your kingly rule over Israel—make it a sure thing on a sure foundation. The same covenant guarantee I gave to David your father I’m giving to you, namely, ‘You can count on always having a descendant on Israel’s throne.’

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:13-15 These verses refer directly to Solomon’s prayer (see 6:26, 2840). God outlined for Solomon the requirements for rescue from judgment. In Solomon’s prayer, each case had been addressed separately; in the Lord’s answer, the required response is developed more generally and comprehensively. The people need humility, repentance, seeking the Lord, and prayer in order to be healed from their distresses.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) Suppose that I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain

(Some words not found in UHB: if shut_up the=heavens and=not will_belong rain and=if command on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in locust to,devour the=earth/land and=if send pestilence in/on/at/with,people_of,my )

Here “heavens” refers to the sky, and is spoken of as if it were a building in which God stores the rain. See how you translated a similar phrase in [2 Chronicles 6:26](../06/26.md). Alternate translation: “Suppose that I do not allow the rain to fall from the skies”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) devour the land

(Some words not found in UHB: if shut_up the=heavens and=not will_belong rain and=if command on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in locust to,devour the=earth/land and=if send pestilence in/on/at/with,people_of,my )

The word “land” represents the plants and crops on the land.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) if I send disease among my people

(Some words not found in UHB: if shut_up the=heavens and=not will_belong rain and=if command on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in locust to,devour the=earth/land and=if send pestilence in/on/at/with,people_of,my )

Here “send disease” represents causing diseases. Alternate translation: “if I cause my people to have diseases”
