TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:1-3 the seventh year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity: Five more years would pass before the destruction of Jerusalem.
• The leaders (literally elders) of Israel—the leaders of the community in exile—came to Ezekiel once again, looking for a word from the Lord (cp. 8:1; 14:1). Normally, seeking a message from the Lord is a good thing. But these leaders had already been condemned for their mixed motives (see ch 14), and the Lord would not receive their request. The question they asked Ezekiel is not recorded—perhaps they never had the opportunity to ask it.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) Son of man

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind speak DOM elders Yisrael and,say to,them thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD ?,to,consult DOM=me you_all coming he/it_lived I if consulted to/for=you_all declares my=master GOD )

God calls Ezekiel this to emphasize that Ezekiel is only a human being. God is eternal and powerful, but humans are not. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 2:1. Alternate translation: “Mortal person” or “Human”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) As I live

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind speak DOM elders Yisrael and,say to,them thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD ?,to,consult DOM=me you_all coming he/it_lived I if consulted to/for=you_all declares my=master GOD )

“As surely as I am alive.” Yahweh uses this expression to show that what he says next is certainly true. This is a way of making a solemn promise. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 5:11. Alternate translation: “I solemnly swear”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Have you come to inquire of me?

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind speak DOM elders Yisrael and,say to,them thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD ?,to,consult DOM=me you_all coming he/it_lived I if consulted to/for=you_all declares my=master GOD )

Yahweh asks this rhetorical question to emphasize that the elders should not be inquiring of him. Alternate translation: “You should not come to inquire of me.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

(Occurrence 0) this is the Lord Yahweh’s declaration

(Some words not found in UHB: son_of humankind speak DOM elders Yisrael and,say to,them thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD ?,to,consult DOM=me you_all coming he/it_lived I if consulted to/for=you_all declares my=master GOD )

Yahweh speaks of himself by name to express the certainty of what he is declaring. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 5:11. Alternate translation: “this is what the Lord Yahweh has declared” or “this is what I, the Lord Yahweh, have declared”
