TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:1-3 the seventh year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity: Five more years would pass before the destruction of Jerusalem.
• The leaders (literally elders) of Israel—the leaders of the community in exile—came to Ezekiel once again, looking for a word from the Lord (cp. 8:1; 14:1). Normally, seeking a message from the Lord is a good thing. But these leaders had already been condemned for their mixed motives (see ch 14), and the Lord would not receive their request. The question they asked Ezekiel is not recorded—perhaps they never had the opportunity to ask it.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) the word of Yahweh came

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was word YHWH to=me to=say )

This is an idiom that is used to introduce something that God told his prophets or his people. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 3:16. Alternate translation: “Yahweh spoke this message” or “Yahweh spoke these words”
