TSNTyndale Study Notes:

29:3-16 The opening section of the oracle is a word of judgment against Pharaoh, who is addressed as a great sea monster. These creatures were a familiar part of ancient Near Eastern mythology as a manifestation of chaos that had to be tamed by the gods. Strikingly, these same sea monsters appear in demythologized form as part of God’s good creation (Gen 1:21). In this chapter, however, the mythical image blends with the image of Pharaoh as a great crocodile, resting comfortably in the streams that laced the delta of the Nile.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) know that I am Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: and, know all/each/any/every inhabitants Miʦrayim/(Egypt) that/for/because/then/when I YHWH because been, they staff reed to,house Yisrael )

When Yahweh says that people will know that he is Yahweh, he is implying that they will know that he is the one true God who has supreme authority and power. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 6:7. Alternate translation: “understand that I am Yahweh, the one true God” or “realize that I, Yahweh, have supreme power and authority”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) they have been a reed stalk

(Some words not found in UHB: and, know all/each/any/every inhabitants Miʦrayim/(Egypt) that/for/because/then/when I YHWH because been, they staff reed to,house Yisrael )

The word “they” refers to the inhabitants of Egypt. A reed stalk is unreliable because it is easily broken. Yahweh speaks of them as a reed stalk because the people of Israel relied on the Egyptians to help them in war, but the Egyptians did not help them. Alternate translation: “they have been as unreliable as a reed stalk”

(Occurrence 0) reed

(Some words not found in UHB: and, know all/each/any/every inhabitants Miʦrayim/(Egypt) that/for/because/then/when I YHWH because been, they staff reed to,house Yisrael )

a plant that grows near water and looks like very large grass

(Occurrence 0) stalk

(Some words not found in UHB: and, know all/each/any/every inhabitants Miʦrayim/(Egypt) that/for/because/then/when I YHWH because been, they staff reed to,house Yisrael )

the part of a reed that is long and like a thick stick. People can use them like sticks, but the stalks of reeds are not as strong as wood and can break suddenly.
