TSNTyndale Study Notes:

16:1-18 Jeremiah’s life was to be a sign or a parable (see “Prophetic Sign Acts” Theme Note), as the Lord instructed him not to marry (Jer 16:1-4) and not to go to funerals (16:5-7) or celebrations (16:8-9).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) No one must share any food in mourning to comfort them because of the deaths … none must give a comforting cup to his father or his mother

(Some words not found in UHB: and=not break_bread to/for=them on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in mourner to,comfort,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dead and=not give_~_todrink DOM,them cup consolation on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=father and,for his/its=mother )

These two clauses have a similar meaning. God said basically the same thing twice for emphasis. It was customary to take food or wine to people whose relative had died. Yahweh has removed all comfort from the people because of their sin.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) none must give a comforting cup

(Some words not found in UHB: and=not break_bread to/for=them on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in mourner to,comfort,him on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dead and=not give_~_todrink DOM,them cup consolation on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=father and,for his/its=mother )

Here the word “cup” represents the drink that the cup holds. Alternate translation: “none must give a comforting drink”
