Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:23 If you forgive anyone’s sins: The ongoing work of Christ’s followers parallels the work of Christ. Christ’s followers do not distribute and withdraw God’s forgiveness on a whim, but they follow Jesus’ prompting through the Spirit (15:5), just as Jesus obeyed his Father (14:31).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀφέωνται αὐτοῖς

˱they˲_/have_been/_forgiven ˱to˲_them

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “God will forgive them”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἄν τινων κρατῆτε, κεκράτηνται

if ˱of˲_any if ˱of˲_any ˱you_all˲_/may_be/_restraining ˱they˲_/have_been/_restrained

To retain sins means to not forgive someone for the sins that they have committed. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: “whoever’s sins you might not forgive, they will not be forgiven”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

κεκράτηνται

˱they˲_/have_been/_restrained

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “God will retain them”
