Here, word represents what Yahweh said by using words. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [so that Yahweh may raise up what he said]

David is speaking as if Yahweh’s word, or what Yahweh said, were an object that Yahweh could raise up. He means that Yahweh will cause what he said to happen. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [so that Yahweh may make what he said happen]

If you have been representing the term “saying” in your translation when it introduces a direct quotation, you could probably omit the second instance of saying here, since it occurs within the same quotation as the first instance. Alternate translation: [when he said, ‘If your sons keep their way, to walk to my face in truth with all of their heart and with all of their soul, then a man to you will not be cut off from upon the throne of Israel]

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [saying that if my sons kept their way, to walk to his face in truth with all of their heart and with all of their soul, then a man to me would not be cut off from upon the throne of Israel]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יִשְׁמְר֨וּ בָנֶ֜יךָ אֶת־דַּרְכָּ֗ם

See how you translated the similar expression in [2:3](../02/03.md). Alternate translation: [your sons live as they should]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בָנֶ֜יךָ

descendants_of,your

Here Yahweh was speaking as if future generations were actually sons. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [your descendants]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לְפָנַי֙

to/for=my=face/front

Here, to my face represents being in Yahweh’s presence. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [in my presence]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בֶּאֱמֶ֔ת

(Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of truth, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [truly] or [sincerely]

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּכָל־לְבָבָ֖ם וּבְכָל־נַפְשָׁ֑ם

(Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

Yahweh is referring to all of a person by naming two major components of a person, his heart and his soul. These represent overlapping aspects of the inner life of a person, representing a person’s thoughts, feelings, desires, and intentions. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [with their entire being]

Note 10 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

בְּכָל־לְבָבָ֖ם וּבְכָל־נַפְשָׁ֑ם

(Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

In this verse, the words heart and soul are singular in form, but they refer to all David’s sons as a group. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use plural forms of these words. Alternate translation: [with all of their hearts and with all of their souls] or [with their entire beings]

Note 11 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ

to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man

The phrase a man to you is a possessive form. It means “a man who belongs to you,” and it describes someone who is a male descendant of David. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [one of your male descendants]

Note 12 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל

not (Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

This is a double negative, consisting of the negative not and the verb cut off. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a positive expression to translate this. Alternate translation: [a man to you will always be on]

Note 13 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ

not (Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

The expression will not be cut off is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [I will not cut off a man to you]

Note 14 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ

not (Some words not found in UHB: so_that establish YHWH DOM word_of,his which/who he/it_had_said on,me to=say if take_heed descendants_of,your DOM way_of,their to=go to/for=my=face/front in,faithfulness in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their to=say not fail to/for=yourself(m) (a)_man from=under throne_of Yisrael )

Here Yahweh is speaking as David’s descendants could be cut off from the throne. This image depicts someone being removed from power as if they were being physically separated from the throne, like a branch being cut from a tree. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [a man to you will not be removed] or [I will not remove a man to you]

Note 15 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

The throne of Israel represents rule and authority as king over Israel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [from reigning over Israel] or [from being the king of Israel]
