2:1-12 David gave his final charge to Solomon in two sections: personal advice for spiritual living (2:2-4) and instructions about people David had dealt with (2:5-9).
God’s Covenant with Israel’s Kings
Solomon understood his role as David’s successor (1 Kgs 3:7). The aged King David had admonished his son Solomon to keep all of God’s requirements in the law of Moses in order to “be successful in all you do and wherever you go” (2:3). Solomon’s faithfulness would allow the fulfillment of God’s promises to David (1 Kgs 2:4; see 2 Sam 7:5-16). Early in his reign, he consciously emulated his father’s love for and faithfulness to God (1 Kgs 3:3), and he recognized that God had kept his promises to David (8:23-26).
Several times during Solomon’s reign, God himself communicated the inviolability of his covenant with David (3:14; 9:4-5; 11:38). God ultimately judged Solomon and subsequent kings by their faithfulness to that covenant in comparison to David (11:12-13; 14:8; 15:3-5, 11). God’s commendation and blessing or disapproval and judgment were consistently based on whether people kept or violated his law (see Deut 28). During the days of the kings, the people of Israel were condemned for willfully turning away from the clear precepts of the Lord contained in the law and spoken through God’s prophets (2 Kgs 17:13-17). Their rejection of God resulted in judgment (2 Kgs 17:18-23; 21:11-15).
God’s dealings with the kings of Israel provide an example for those who are now in covenant with God through Christ. God’s people today are to love the Lord, keep his commandments (John 14:21), and be faithful to him in all things (Matt 25:21; Luke 16:10-12; 2 Tim 3:14; 4:7). Those who follow David’s example of faithfulness will similarly receive God’s praise (see Acts 13:22). Those who confess the name of Jesus, David’s heir (Acts 13:32-37), and who have a heart of devotion to God and his word will seek to live lives that are pure and pleasing to God (see Heb 13:20-21). They look forward to an abundant, eternal inheritance (2 Tim 4:8; Rev 2:10; cp. Gal 5:19-21).

Note 1 topic: writing-poetry
וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֞ אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ
and,keep DOM charge YHWH God,your
Here, keep the keeping is an emphatic construction that uses a verb and its object that come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis. Alternate translation: “and you shall carefully fulfill your obligation to Yahweh your God”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ
DOM charge YHWH God,your
Here, David is using the possessive form to describe keeping that is required by Yahweh your God. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: “what Yahweh your God requires you to keep:”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ
YHWH God,your
Here David emphasizes that Yahweh is Solomon’s God, but he implies that Yahweh is his God as well. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “Yahweh, your God and mine,”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לָלֶ֤כֶת בִּדְרָכָיו֙
to=go in/on/at/with,ways,his
David speaks of obeying God as if it were walking in God‘s ways. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to act as he desires” or “to live your life in the way that he wishes”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
חֻקֹּתָ֤יו מִצְוֺתָיו֙ וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו וְעֵדְוֺתָ֔יו
statutes,his commandments,his and,ordinances,his and,testimonies,his
The terms statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies mean similar things. David is using these four terms together to refer to every kind of command and requirement that God has given. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use one, two, or three terms that together refer to every command that God has given. Alternate translation: “his commandments and his judgments and his requirements” or “all his commandments”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
חֻקֹּתָ֤יו מִצְוֺתָיו֙ וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו וְעֵדְוֺתָ֔יו
statutes,his commandments,his and,ordinances,his and,testimonies,his
If your language does not use abstract nouns for some or all of the ideas in this list, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: “what he has required, commanded, decided, and testified to”
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
כַּכָּת֖וּב בְּתוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֑ה
as_the,written in/on/at/with,law Mosheh
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, you could use an indefinite subject or indicate that Moses did it. Alternate translation: “as people wrote in the law of Moses”
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּפְנֶ֖ה שָֽׁם

The expression everywhere that you turn there contains extra information that would be unnatural to express in some languages. If this is true of your language, you could shorten the expression. Alternate translation: “everywhere you turn”
