Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:13–20: Wisdom is valuable and is useful for both people and the LORD

This section teaches the value of wisdom by showing its usefulness to people and the LORD. It is useful to people, because it results in long life, wealth, honor, pleasantness, and peace (3:13–18). It is useful to the LORD, because he used it to create the world (3:19–20).

Another heading for this section is:

The Value of Wisdom (CEV)

3:16

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning. They form a chiasm. The parts in 3:16a occur in the opposite order from the parallel parts in 3:16b.

16a Long life is in her right hand;

16b in her left hand are riches and honor.

If a chiasm is not natural in your language, you may need to reorder the parallel parts. For example:

16a Long life is in her right hand;

16b riches and honor are in her left hand.

3:16a

Long life is in her right hand;

3:16b

in her left hand are riches and honor.

3:16a–b

Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor: This verse describes the benefits that a person gains by being wise. The verse uses personification. It describes wisdom as a woman. She hands out gifts with both hands to her followers.

In some cultures it is considered offensive to extend the left hand toward someone. If this is true in your culture, you may want to leave the mention of a particular hand implied. For example:

Wisdom offers you a long life. She hands/gives you riches and honor.

If personification is not meaningful in your language, you may need to translate the meaning without using this figure of speech. See the second meaning lines in the Display for 3:16a and 3:16b. For more information on personification, see the note on 1:20a–b.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אֹ֣רֶךְ יָ֭מִים

long_of days

See how you translated this idiom in [3:2](../03/02.md).

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

בִּֽימִינָ֑הּ בִּ֝שְׂמֹאולָ֗הּ

[is]_in,her_right_of,hand [are]_in,her_left_of,hand

In this verse, her refers to wisdom as if it were a woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “is in wisdom’s right hand; in wisdom’s left hand”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בִּֽימִינָ֑הּ בִּ֝שְׂמֹאולָ֗הּ עֹ֣שֶׁר

[is]_in,her_right_of,hand [are]_in,her_left_of,hand riches

Here Solomon speaks of wise people receiving length of days, riches, and honor as if they were objects received from the right and left hands of wisdom. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “is received by those who have wisdom; those who have wisdom receive riches”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וְכָבֽוֹד

and,honor

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of honor, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “and being honored”
