Yahweh’s rule over the world

OET Psa 115:1-11

115 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us,

but to your name bring honour,

for your loyal commitment and for your trustworthiness.

2 Why should the other nations have to ask,

“Where is their god?”

3 Our god is in heaven—

he does whatever he wants.

4 The other nations’ gods are gold and silver idols

that people have made with their own hands.

5 Those idols have mouths, but they can’t speak.

≈ They have eyes, but they can’t see.

6 They have ears, but they can’t hear.

≈ They have noses, but they can’t smell.

7 They have hands, but can’t feel anything.

≈ They have feet, but can’t walk.

They can’t make any sounds in their throats.

8 The people who make them are just like them,

as is everyone who trusts them to help them.

9 Yisrael (Israel), trust in Yahweh—

he’s your help and protection.

10 You priests, descendants of Aharon (Aaron), trust in Yahweh—

he’s your help and protection.

11 You who respect and strive to obey Yahweh, trust in him—

he’s your help and protection.

OET Dan 4:34-37

34 “After the seven years, I, Nevukadnetsar (Nebuchadnezzar) looked up toward heaven and my reason returned to me. Then I praised and honoured the highest one who lives forever, because his authority is everlasting and his kingdom endures through the generations. 35 Compared to him, all the inhabitants of the earth are insignificant like ants—he issues his commands to the heavenly army and to earth’s inhabitants. No one can hold back his hand or has any right to ask him, ‘What have you done?’ ”

36 “At that time my sanity returned to me, and I was reestablished in my kingdom. My majesty and my splendour was restored to me as I became again the respected leader of my kingdom. My counsellors and my nobles wanted to be in my company, and I became even more powerful than I was before. 37 Now I, Nevukadnetsar, praise, extol, and honour the king of the heavens, because everything he does is, and his methods are just, and he’s able to humble those who become proud.

OET Acts 17:22-31

22 So Paulos stood up in the middle of the gathering on the hill and spoke, “Men of Athainai, I’ve noticed how you all are very religious, 23 because as I was looking around and observing your objects of worship, I even discovered an altar that was inscribed, ‘To the unknown god.’ So without knowing it, you already worship this God that I’m going to tell you about. 24 This God who created the earth and everything in it is Yahweh who’s over heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in man-made temples 25 nor can he be repaired by any human hands and he doesn’t need to be fed. On the contrary, he’s the one who gives life and breath and who gives us everything that we need. 26 From one man he made every nationality that lives across all the earth and designated their boundaries and their futures. 27 He made them so that they would try to discover God, and if they did search for him they might find him as he’s not far from any one of us 28 because

‘We live in him and are moved by him and exist through him.’

Even some of your own poets wrote,

‘We are all descended from just one.’

29 So since we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t be putting gold or silver or stone craftsmanship in the same class as the divine. 30 In fact God overlooked times of such ignorance in the past, but now he’s informing everyone and requiring them to repent 31 because he’s set a date for when he’s going to be fairly judging the world. He’s already appointed the judge who everyone can have faith in because he brought him back to life from the dead.

Human plans and Yahweh’s purposes

OET Gen 50:15-21

15 Now that their father was no longer alive, Yosef’s (Joseph) brothers said to each other, “What if Yosef hates us and now he decides to repay us for all the evil things that we did to him?” 16 So they sent a messenger to Yosef to tell him, “Before he died, your father ordered that 17 you be given this message: ‘I beg you, please forgive your brothers’ crime and their sin, because they did evil things to you.’ So now, please forgive the crime of the servants of your father’s god.” When Yosef heard their message, he started crying.

18 Then his brothers also came and bowed to the ground in front of him and pleaded, “Here we are. We belong to you as slaves.”

19 “Don’t be afraid,” Yosef answered. “I’m not God and it’s not my job to decide on your punishment. 20 You all plotted evil things against me, but God intended it for good in order to do what he’s doing this very day: to save many people. 21 So now, don’t be afraid. I’ll support you and your little ones.” So he reassured them and he spoke kindly to them.

OET Prov 16:1-9

16 People make their own plans,

→ then Yahweh decides what will happen.

2 People always tell themselves that they’re doing the right thing,

^ but Yahweh evaluates their motives.

3 Entrust what you’re doing to Yahweh,

→ and your plans will be effective.

4 Yahweh makes everything for his purpose,

→ even the wicked for the day of disaster.

5 Yahweh detests every person who’s arrogant—

→ they certainly won’t go unpunished.

6 Disobedience can be made up for by faithfulness and loyal commitment,

and those who respect and honour Yahweh avoid doing what’s evil.

7 When Yahweh is pleased with a person’s behaviour,

→ he causes even his enemies to be at peace with them.

8 It’s better to have just a little from doing what’s right,

than a large income acquired dishonestly.

9 People plan their ways in their minds,

→ but Yahweh directs their steps.

16:4 OSHB note: We read one or more accents in L differently from BHQ.

OET Rom 8:26-30

26 Similarly, the spirit also helps us with our weaknesses, because we don’t even know what to pray for, but the spirit intercedes with groanings that we can’t put into words. 27 The one who searches our hearts knows the mindset of the spirit, because the spirit intercedes for the believers as God desires.

28 We know that God makes all things work together for good for everyone who loves him—those who are being invited according to his purpose. 29 After all, those he knew in advance, he also determined in advance to be similar to his son’s image, so that his son would become the eldest of many siblings. 30 The ones he’d determined in advance he also invited, and the ones he’d invited, he also declared guiltless, and the ones he declared guiltless, he also honoured in heaven.

Trusting Yahweh’s care for our lives

OET Mat 6:25-34

25 “So that’s why I’m telling you all not to worry about your worldly life—things like what you’ll eat or drink, or how you look and what you’ll wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Think about the birds in the sky—they don’t plant seeds or harvest crops or gather grain into barns, but it’s your heavenly father who feeds them. Aren’t each of you worth more than them? 27 Who can add an hour to their lifetime by worrying?

28 “Why would you worry about clothes? Look how the flowers grow in the fields—they don’t work or make fabric, 29 but I can tell you that not even King Shelomoh (Solomon) at the peak of his reign was dressed as well as the flowers.[ref] 30 So if God dresses the plants in the fields that are here today and thrown away tomorrow, won’t he care much more for you, you people with little faith?

31 “That means that you people don’t need to worry about having anything to eat or drink, or having clothes to wear. 32 People with no trust in God try to obtain all those things, but your heavenly father already knows that you need these things. 33 So instead you should be striving to enter God’s kingdom and to be guiltless in his eyes, and then all these other things will just follow. 34 Don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow can worry about itself—today’s problems are enough by themselves.

OET Mat 10:26-31

26 “Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, because nothing’s covered up that won’t eventually be revealed, and nothing’s hidden that won’t be made known.[ref] 27 Whatever I tell you apprentices in the darkness, speak it out in the light, and what you hear whispered, go and yell it out from up on the top porch. 28 Don’t be afraid of anyone who can kill your body but who can’t touch your soul, but rather work to please the one who can destroy both soul and body in fire. 29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for almost nothing? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your father being involved. 30 For you apprentices, even the hairs on your head have been counted, 31 so don’t worry about things, because you’re more valuable than any sparrows.

OET Yac (Jam) 4:13-17

13 Now you all might say, ‘Today or tomorrow we’ll go into the city to work there for a year and do some trading to make some money.’[ref] 14 But you don’t know what tomorrow will bring, because what are your lives? You’re like a vapour that appears for a brief period and then it’s gone. 15 So instead of saying that, you should say, ‘If the master wants it, we will live and we’ll do this or that.’ 16 But as it is, you’ve all been boasting in your arrogance and that’s an evil attitude. 17 Any person who knows that there’s some good thing that they should be doing, but doesn’t do it, is sinning.
