Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בֵּ֣ית אַ֭הֲרֹן

(Some words not found in UHB: house_of ʼAhₐron trust in,Yahweh help_of,[is]_their and,shield_of,their he/it )

Here, House means all the people descended from a particular person. This image envisions them as if they were one household living together. So House of Aaron figuratively means all the people descended from Aaron, the first high priest. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Descendants of Aaron]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

עֶזְרָ֖ם וּמָגִנָּ֣ם

help_of,[is]_their (Some words not found in UHB: house_of ʼAhₐron trust in,Yahweh help_of,[is]_their and,shield_of,their he/it )

The psalmist switches here from the second person exhortation trust in Yahweh to the third person their help and their shield. It is probable that when this psalm was sung, a leader would sing the second person exhortation parts and a chorus would sing the third-person parts of verses 9–11. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the third person parts as second person. Alternate translation: [your help and your shield]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

עֶזְרָ֖ם

help_of,[is]_their

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of help, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the one who helps them] or [the one who helps you]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמָגִנָּ֣ם

(Some words not found in UHB: house_of ʼAhₐron trust in,Yahweh help_of,[is]_their and,shield_of,their he/it )

Here the psalmist is speaking of Yahweh as if he were a shield that protects people from attack. If this image communicates well in your language, please use it. If not, you could express this as a comparison. Alternate translation: [and the one who protects them] or [and the one who protects you]
