2:5 Note: BHS has been faithful to the Leningrad Codex where there might be a question of the validity of the form and we keep the same form as BHS.

OET (OET-RV)After a while, Far’oh’s daughter came down to the river to wash herself, and she and her young attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the container among the reeds and sent one of her slave women to get it.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / go

וַתֵּ֤רֶד

and,went_down

Came down may be literal or figurative, as important places are often considered to be in a higher place. This means she came from her home, probably Pharaoh’s palace. If a perspective is required for Pharaoh’s daughter, you may choose go or come as works best in your language. “Come” is better as the scene is at the river and she comes to the scene location. However, you also need to consider your language’s way of introducing new participants.

Note 2 topic: writing-participants

וַתֵּ֤רֶד בַּת־פַּרְעֹה֙

and,went_down daughter_of Farˊoh

The daughter of Pharaoh is introduced here as a new participant. Use the natural form in your language for introducing a new character.

Note 3 topic: writing-participants

וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֥יהָ

and,attendants,her

These women are introduced here as new participants; however, they are not mentioned again after this verse.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

עַל־יַ֣ד הַיְאֹ֑ר

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in bank the,river

Here, hand is a metaphor for side or, as relating to a river, shore. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could simply translate the meaning.

וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֥יהָ

and,attendants,her

These were the young women whose job it was to be with her and make sure nothing bad happened to her.

Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns

וַתִּקָּחֶֽהָ

and,took,it

It is not clear who is meant by she here, either Pharaoh’s daughter or the servant. It is likely that Pharaoh’s daughter remains the subject. Alternative translation: “and she took the ark from her slave”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:1-25 Chapter 1 established the need for rescue; ch 2 describes the preparation of Moses, the rescuer. God used the destruction of the Hebrew boy babies to ensure that the rescuer would be trained (see study note on 2:10) for his task.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
