OET (OET-LV)In_the_day (the)_that he_made Yahweh with Abram a_covenant to_say to_descendants_your I_give DOM the_earth/land the_this from_river of_Miʦrayim/(Egypt) to the_river the_big/great(sg) the_river of_Fərāt.

OET (OET-RV) On that day Yahweh made an agreement with Abram, saying, “I’ve given this land to your descendants, from Egypt’s river to the famous Euphrates River.

uW Translation Notes:

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא

in_the=day (the)=that

It is still nighttime at this point (See: verse 17), so the word day refers generally here to a 24-hour day; it does not refer to daytime. Alternate translation: “On that very day”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / Idiom

כָּרַ֧ת יְהוָ֛ה

made YHWH

Alternate translation: “Yahweh established”

אֶת אַבְרָ֖ם בְּרִ֣ית

DOM Avram covenant

See how you translated covenant in Gen 9:9, 11-13, 15-17. Alternate translation: “a peace covenant with Abram”

Note 2 topic: writing-quotations

לֵאמֹ֑ר

to=say

Alternate translation: “by saying,”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

לְזַרְעֲךָ֗ נָתַ֨תִּי֙ אֶת הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את

to,descendants,your I_give DOM the=earth/land the,this

In the Hebrew text “to your offspring/descendants” is first in this quote to emphasize Abram’s descendants. Do what is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “I am giving your offspring this land,” or “I hereby give this land to your offspring”

מִנְּהַ֣ר מִצְרַ֔יִם

from,river Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

This phrase probably refers to the Wadi El-Arish (not the Nile River), which is on the border between Egypt and Israel. It is best in a translation to leave this general as the Hebrew text does.

עַד הַנָּהָ֥ר הַגָּדֹ֖ל נְהַר פְּרָֽת

until the=river the=big/great(sg) river Fərāt

Alternate translation: “to the big Euphrates River in the north,”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:1-21 The Lord made a formal covenant with Abram, solemnly confirming the promises made at his call (12:1-3). There would be a long period of slavery for Abram’s descendants before these promises would be completely fulfilled.
