uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) After the suffering of his life

(Some words not found in UHB: out_of,anguish_of soul_of,his he/it_will_see satisfied in/on/at/with,knowledge_of,his justify law-abiding/just servant_of,my to_the,many and,iniquities_of,their he/it bear )

Here “his life” refers to the servant. Alternate translation: “After the servant has suffered”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) he will see light

(Some words not found in UHB: out_of,anguish_of soul_of,his he/it_will_see satisfied in/on/at/with,knowledge_of,his justify law-abiding/just servant_of,my to_the,many and,iniquities_of,their he/it bear )

Many versions understand “light” here to stand for life. That is, the servant will become alive again.

(Occurrence 0) My righteous servant

(Some words not found in UHB: out_of,anguish_of soul_of,his he/it_will_see satisfied in/on/at/with,knowledge_of,his justify law-abiding/just servant_of,my to_the,many and,iniquities_of,their he/it bear )

Here “my” refers to Yahweh.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) he will bear their iniquities

(Some words not found in UHB: out_of,anguish_of soul_of,his he/it_will_see satisfied in/on/at/with,knowledge_of,his justify law-abiding/just servant_of,my to_the,many and,iniquities_of,their he/it bear )

The word “bear” means carry. This could mean: (1) “their iniquities” is a metonym representing the punishment for their sins. Alternate translation: “he will take their punishment” or “he will be punished for their sins” * or (2) “their iniquities” is a metonym representing their guilt. Alternate translation: “he will take their guilt upon himself” or “he will be guilty for their sins”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

53:11 his experience (literally his knowledge): This clearly does not refer to intellectual knowledge but to all that the servant would experience in his obedience, suffering, and intimate relationship with God.
• The servant’s righteous obedience enables people to be put right with God (see Gen 15:6; Rom 5:18-19), for he will bear all their sins.
