OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said thus may_he_do to/for_me god and_also may_he_add if it_will_remain_standing the_head_of ʼElīshāˊ the_son_of Shāfāţ on/upon/above_him/it the_day.

OET (OET-RV)and he said, “May God do that to me and more, if Shafat’s son Elisha still has his head on him by the end of the day.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

(Occurrence 0) May God do so to me, and more also

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said so he/it_made/did to/for=me ʼElohīm and, also more if remains head ʼElīshāˊ son_of Shāfāţ on/upon/above=him/it the=day )

The king is saying he hopes God will punish him and even kill him if Elisha the prophet does not die because of the things that have happened in the city of Samaria. Alternate translation: “May God punish me and kill me”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on him today

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said so he/it_made/did to/for=me ʼElohīm and, also more if remains head ʼElīshāˊ son_of Shāfāţ on/upon/above=him/it the=day )

This refers to Elisha dying, specifically be being beheaded. Alternate translation: “if Elisha son of Shaphat is not beheaded today” or “if my soldiers do not behead Elisha son of Shaphat today”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:31 separate Elisha’s head from his shoulders: Decapitation of one’s enemy was frequent (10:6-8; 1 Sam 17:51; 31:9; 2 Sam 4:7-8, 12; 20:22; Matt 14:11) in the ancient Near East. Joram reasoned that the situation stemmed from Elisha’s earlier sparing of Ben-hadad’s troops (2 Kgs 6:22-23). Moreover, Ben-hadad had been after Elisha (6:13), so the prophet’s presence had endangered the whole city.
