SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:19

By your patient endurance you will gain your souls.

By your patient endurance you will gain your souls: This clause is a promise. There is a textual issue here that concerns the form of the verb that the BSB translates as “you will gain.” Many Greek manuscripts (including those followed here by the UBS and the Majority text) have an imperative form (instead of the future form). Almost all English versions have the future form here. Even with the command form, the meaning is virtually the same in English. The command “By standing firm, gain life,” is also a promise that the patience of the disciples will result in their gaining life. It indicates that by remaining firmly loyal to Jesus, his disciples will gain eternal life. The meaning is similar to the parallel verse Mark 13:13b, which says, “but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.”

In some languages it may be helpful to reverse the order of phrases in this clause. For example:

You will be saved by being faithful to me. (CEV)

You will receive eternal life if you remain faithful to me.

By your patient endurance: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as By your patient endurance is literally “in your endurance.” This phrase tells the way that the disciples will gain life. Some other ways to translate this meaning are:

Translate this meaning in a natural way in your language.

patient endurance: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as patient endurance is literally “your endurance.” endurance refers to steadfast perseverance through difficulties and suffering. In this context it refers specifically to the disciples remaining faithful to Jesus even when people persecute them and threaten to kill them because they obey him. In some languages it may be necessary to translate the meaning more explicitly. For example:

If you endure such times without giving up your faith in me

Stand/Remain firm in your faith in me no matter what happens

you will gain your souls: The Greek phrase that the BSB literally translates as you will gain your souls clearly implies that the disciples would gain something that they did not yet have, which is eternal life with God. Faithful disciples of Jesus will live eternally with God. Some ways to translate this clause are:

you(plur) will receive eternal life

God will give you eternal life

uW Translation Notes:

ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσεσθε τάς ψυχάς ὑμῶν)

Alternate translation: [If you remain faithful to me]

κτήσασθε τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσεσθε τάς ψυχάς ὑμῶν)

Here “soul” means the eternal part of a person. Alternate translation: [you will receive eternal life]
