SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

Paragraph 21:20–24

In this paragraph Jesus began a new topic. In 21:12–19 he had talked about the persecution that his disciples would endure before the end. In this paragraph Jesus talked about the future time when an army would attack the city of Jerusalem and destroy it.It is possible that this passage will have two fulfillments. The first application referred to the time when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This happened about forty years after people had crucified Jesus. Many Christians think that Jerusalem will be attacked again in the last days of this age. This would be a second fulfillment of this prediction. Jesus warned his disciples to escape when they saw armies gathering around Jerusalem.

21:21a

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,

Then: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Then is a time word. It introduces what the people of Israel should do when enemy armies begin to surround Jerusalem. Here is another way to translate this:

At that time (NCV)

let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains: This clause is a command. It means that any of Jesus’ disciples who are in Judea at that time must run away and hide in the mountains. This was the only way that they could escape the enemy soldiers. Other ways to translate this command are:

You(plur) who are in the region of Judea must escape to the mountains and hide

Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills (GNT)

If you are in Judea, hurry to the hills and hide

Judea: Judea was a province in the Roman Empire. It was part of the land that God promised to give Abraham and his descendants, the Jewish people. Many Jews lived in Judea, and the city of Jerusalem was located there. A Roman governor ruled Judea under the authority of the Roman emperor. However, Jewish leaders were allowed some authority to enforce laws for their own people.

In some languages it may be necessary or helpful to include a word that tells what the name Judea refers to. If that is true in your language, use an appropriate term to refer to a state, province, or district within a country.

mountains: Jesus probably referred here to the mountains and hills located in the southern part of Judea surrounding the Dead Sea.Since Judea itself is mountainous, the mountains spoken of here probably refer to those located in Transjordan, or in the remoter areas of Judea itself, such as the mountains and caves around the Dead Sea.

21:21b

let those in the city get out,

let those in the city get out: This clause is another command. It means that people who are in the city of Jerusalem at that future time must leave it. People usually felt safer in a city like Jerusalem because walls surrounded it. However, at this future time, the city of Jerusalem will be destroyed, and many people will be killed. To be saved, people will have to leave the city and run away.

Other ways to translate this command are:

You who are in the city must leave it.

Those of you who are in the city must escape from it.

If you are inside Jerusalem, get out of the city.

21:21c

and let those in the country stay out of the city.

let those in the country stay out of the city: This clause is a command that tells people what they must do. It means that anyone who is in the countryside must not come into the city. People who lived in the villages and fields around Jerusalem often tried to get inside the city in a time of danger. But at the future time when armies surround the city, people must not go into it.

Other way to translate this command are:

You who are in the fields must not enter the city.

If you are in the countryside, do not come into Jerusalem.

Those of you in the countryside must not come to the city.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἰς τὰ ὄρη

to into (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τά ὄρη καί οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καί οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μή εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν)

The implication is that people who fled to the mountains would be safe there. Alternate translation: [to the mountains, where they will be safe]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς

in in midst ˱of˲_her

Here the pronoun it means Jerusalem. Alternate translation: [within the city of Jerusalem]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις, μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν

the_‹ones› in the_‹ones› in the_‹ones› in the countries (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τά ὄρη καί οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καί οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μή εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν)

The term fields refers implicitly to the farms around Jerusalem that provided the main food supply for the city. Alternate translation: [the people living on the farms around the city should not seek shelter within its protective walls]

οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις, μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν

the_‹ones› in the_‹ones› in the_‹ones› in the countries (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τά ὄρη καί οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καί οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μή εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this positively. Alternate translation: [the people living on the farms around the city should stay outside of it where they will be safer]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:21 Those in Jerusalem must get out: Because of this prophecy, Christians in Judea fled to the town of Pella in Decapolis before the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 (Eusebius, Church History 3.5).

OET (OET-RV)Then those who are in Yudea should flee to the hills and those in the central area should get out, and foreigners should no longer go there

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
