OET (OET-LV) And they_asked him saying:
Teacher, therefore when things these will_be, and what the sign whenever these things may_be_going to_be_becoming?
OET (OET-RV) Then they asked Yeshua, “Teacher, when will those things all happen, and what will be the sign that they’re about to happen?”
After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:
The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed
The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.
“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen?
¶ They asked him, “Teacher, when will these things happen,
¶ So/And the disciples asked, “Master, when will all these events happen?
¶ The disciples asked, “Lord, when will they do this?
“Teacher,” they asked: In the Greek text, the phrase that the BSB translates as they asked is literally “and they asked him, saying.” This phrase comes before the word Teacher. Use a natural order in your language, and introduce the quotation in a natural way. Other ways to do this in English are:
So they asked him, “Teacher…” (NET)
Then they questioned him about that, saying, “Teacher…”
And they put to him this question, “Master,” they said (NJB)
Teacher: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Teacher was a polite title for a Jewish religious leader. In this context the disciples addressed Jesus with respect as their teacher and master. Use a natural title in your language for this context. This title was also used in 18:18. For more information, see the note on 18:18a.
they: The pronoun they refers to the disciples who had been talking about the temple in 21:5. Refer back to them here in a natural way in your language.
when will these things happen?: The Greek word that the BSB translates as these things refers primarily to the temple being destroyed. It probably also includes the other events that would happen before and after the destruction of the temple. Some ways to translate the disciples’ question are:
when will these events happen/occur?
when will this be? (GNT)
when will all this happen? (NLT)
In Greek, the question begins with a conjunction that the NASB translates as “therefore.” The BSB and other English versions do not translate this conjunction. Do what is natural here in your language.
And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
and what sign will show/indicate that they are about to happen?”
What will cause/help us(excl) to know that these events will soon occur?”
What will show us(excl) that its time has come/arrived?”
what will be the sign that they are about to take place?: Here the disciples asked Jesus what sign would indicate that the events are about to happen. The Greek word that the BSB translates as sign refers here to a signal or indication. In this context the sign refers to an event or other indication that will show that the statement in 21:6 will soon happen. Other ways to translate the question are:
…what will happen in order to show that the time has come for it to take place? (GNT)
…what will we see, so that we may know that these things will soon happen?
The word sign also occurs in 2:12, 2:34, 11:16, 11:29–30. See how you translated it there. Consider whether you should translate it in the same way here. You may need to translate it differently to fit this context.
that they are about to take place?: The phrase they are about to take place is literally “they will very-soon be accomplished.” It indicates that these events would soon happen.
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
ἐπηρώτησαν & αὐτὸν
˱they˲_asked & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπηρώτησαν Δέ αὐτόν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται καί τί τό σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι)
The pronoun they refers to Jesus’ disciples, and the word him refers to Jesus. Alternate translation: [the disciples asked Jesus] or [Jesus’ disciples asked him]
Διδάσκαλε
Teacher
Teacher is a respectful title. You could translate it with an equivalent term that your language and culture would use.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται, καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι
when therefore these_‹things› will_be (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐπηρώτησαν Δέ αὐτόν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται καί τί τό σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι)
The phrase these things refers implicitly to what Jesus has just said about enemies destroying the temple. Alternate translation: [then when will the temple be destroyed? And how will we know that our enemies are about to destroy it]
OET (OET-LV) And they_asked him saying:
Teacher, therefore when things these will_be, and what the sign whenever these things may_be_going to_be_becoming?
OET (OET-RV) Then they asked Yeshua, “Teacher, when will those things all happen, and what will be the sign that they’re about to happen?”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
