Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple.In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:14a

So make up your mind not to worry beforehand

So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So is often translated as “Therefore” (as in the NET). Here it introduces a command or encouragement that is based on what Jesus said in 21:13.Marshall (p. 768) says, “Having assured the disciples that they will face court situations, Jesus instructs them in their consequent behaviour.” Bock (p. 1670) says, “Since persecution is used by God as an opportunity for testimony, no anxiety should be present….” The context implies that since their trials will be an opportunity to testify about him, they should not worry about how to defend themselves.

Versions such as the GNT and NJB do not translate this conjunction. In some languages, it may not be natural to use a conjunction here. Begin 21:14 in a natural way in your language.

make up your mind: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as make up your mind is literally “put/have in your hearts.” This is an idiom that means “decide” or “resolve” (as in the REB). In some languages there is an idiom to express this, as in the BSB. Some other ways to translate this are:

not to worry beforehand: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as not to worry beforehand means “not to prepare/plan in advance.” It is sometimes used of practicing a speech. In this context Jesus did not want his disciples to plan what they would say to defend themselves. The parallel passage in Mark 13:11 uses a word that means “worry, be anxious.” Jesus also did not want the disciples to worry about what they would say. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

not to meditate beforehand (RSV)

not to rehearse ahead of time (NET)

don’t worry in advance (NLT)

21:14b

how to defend yourselves.

how to defend yourselves: The Greek word that the BSB translates as how to defend yourselves refers to what the disciples would say that would show that they were not guilty. It does not refer to using force to defend themselves. Other ways to translate this are:

about what you will say (NCV)

about how to answer the charges against you (NLT)

about what you will say to convince those who accuse you that you have not done anything wrong

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: θέτε Οὖν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν μή προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι)

But is usually translated “therefore” because it typically introduces a result or conclusion from something that has just been said. However, in some cases, including this one, the term instead indicates a contrast with what has just been said. Knowing they would be put on trial, Jesus’ disciples would naturally want to think about how to defend themselves, but Jesus is telling them, by contrast, not to do that.
