OET (OET-LV)people fainting from fear and expectation of_the things coming_over to_the inhabited_world, because/for the powers of_the heavens will_be_being_shaken.

OET (OET-RV)People will faint from fear and worry about what’s happening to the planet, because the powers in the universe[fn] will be shaken.

21:26 This could possibly be referring to a shake-up of spiritual powers, but more likely refers to the physical universe from our moon and solar system outwards.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:26a

Men will faint from fear and anxiety

Men will faint from fear and anxiety: The clause Men will faint from fear and anxiety means, “People will be so frightened that they will faint.” Many people will be so overcome with fear that they will become unconscious. Some may even die. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

Many people will be so afraid that they will faint

Because of intense fear/dread, many people will fall down unconscious

Men: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Men refers to people in general, not just to males.

21:26b

over what is coming upon the earth,

over what is coming upon the earth: The phrase what is coming upon the earth refers to what will happen in the immediate future. People will be very afraid because they will wonder what terrible things will happen next. Some other ways to translate 21:26b are:

as they fearfully wait for what will happen to the world (GW)

wondering what is happening to the world (NCV)

earth: The Greek wordoikoumenē that the BSB translates as earth refers to the inhabited world or earth.

21:26c

for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

for: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as for introduces a reason or explanation. Jesus explained that people will be apprehensive because the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Another way to introduce 21:26c is:

This will be because

the powers of the heavens will be shaken: The Greek phrase that the BSB literally translates as the powers of the heavens probably refers to the sun, moon, and stars. Here is another way to translate this:

the powers in space will be driven from their courses (GNT)

Some scholars believe that in this context the term powers of the heavens refers to spiritual powers.Paul used the same Greek word that the RSV translates as “powers” to refer to powers that are against Christ in Romans 8:38 and 1 Corinthians 15:24–26 and possibly also in Ephesians 1:21. Peter may have been referring to such spirits when he used the same word in 1 Peter 3:22. Paul said that spirits who were enemies of Christ inhabited “the heavenly places.” He used a form of the same word that the RSV translates as “heavens” in Ephesians 6:12. Jesus may have been saying here that shortly before he returns to earth, he will begin to shake the power of the evil spirits that falsely claim the right to rule over the earth and the people who live on it. At the present time, evil spirits have great influence over many things that some people do. When Jesus starts to shake the power of these spirits, it will affect the way most people live so much that it will cause them to be very afraid. Since the context of 21:25 refers to things in nature, it is more likely that 21:26 refers to the physical sun, moon, stars, and planets. However, it is possible that these physical powers of the heavens may symbolize spiritual powers or be linked to them in some other way. See heaven, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

will be shaken: In this context the verb will be shaken means “will be moved from their proper places/courses.” This is a passive verb. In some languages it may be more natural to use an active verb and supply a subject. For example:

God will shake

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀνθρώπων

people

Here Jesus is using the term Men in a generic sense that includes all people. Alternate translation: [people]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπό φόβου καί προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ αἱ γάρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται)

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The term fear describes what the expectation of people will be like. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [from fearful expectation]

τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ

˱of˲_the_‹things› coming_over ˱to˲_the inhabited_world

Alternate translation: [of the things that are happening in the world] or [of the things that are happening to the world]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπό φόβου καί προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ αἱ γάρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could put this statement first in the verse, since it gives the reason for the results that the rest of the verse describes. You could begin this statement with “Since,” or you could have no introductory word for it and introduce the rest of the verse with “and so.”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

αἱ & δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται

the & powers ˱of˲_the heavens ˓will_be_being˒_shaken

The phrase the powers of the heavens is most likely an idiomatic reference back to the sun, moon, and stars, which Jesus mentioned at the beginning of the previous verse. Alternate translation: [the sun, moon, and stars will be shaken]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

αἱ & δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται

the & powers ˱of˲_the heavens ˓will_be_being˒_shaken

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [God will shake the sun, moon, and stars]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
