SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

Paragraph 21:37–38

This paragraph is a summary and conclusion to Division 19:28–21:38, “Jesus ministered in Jerusalem.” In some languages there may be a special way to introduce a conclusion such as this. In Greek the paragraph begins with a common conjunction. Some English versions have a conjunction like “Now” or “So.”The NET has “So” with the following note: “Here δέ…has been translated as “so” since vv. 37–38 serve as something of a summary or transition from the discourse preceding to the passion narrative that follows.” The NASB has “Now,” which is often used in English to introduce background information. In this context it does introduce information that does not tell the next event but summarizes actions over a period of time. Introduce the paragraph in a natural way in your language.

21:37a

Every day Jesus taught at the temple,

Every day Jesus taught at the temple: This sentence describes what Jesus did every day of the first part of the last week before he died. He came each day to teach at the temple all day. Use a natural way in your language to refer to actions that a person repeats each day.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

During the day Jesus would teach in the temple courtyard. (GW)

Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach… (NLT)

at the temple: The Greek word that the BSB translates as temple refers to the temple building and the walls and courtyards that surrounded it. The temple was in Jerusalem and was the most important place where Jews worshiped God. For more information and translation suggestions, see the note on 18:10a.

In this context Jesus was teaching in the courtyard of the temple, not inside the building. In some languages it may be helpful to specify this. For example:

the temple courtyard

21:37b

but every evening He went out

21:37c

to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.

21:37b–c

but every evening He went out to spend the night on the Mount of Olives: This clause tells what Jesus did every evening and night during the first days of the week before he died. It is similar to 21:37a.

Some other ways to translate it are:

and every evening he went off and spent the night on the hill which is called the Mount of Olives (JBP)

and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives (NLT)

Translate the clause in a natural way in your language.

He went out: The phrase He went out indicates that Jesus left the city of Jerusalem. In some languages it is necessary to make that explicit. For example:

he would leave the city (REB)

the Mount of Olives: This hill was called the Mount of Olives because it had olive trees growing on it. See the note on 19:29b.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-endofstory

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἦν Δέ τάς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τάς δέ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τό ὄρος τό καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν)

Luke uses the word And to introduce information about ongoing action that continues after the part of the story in [20:1–21:36](../20/01.md) ends. Your language may have its own way of showing how such information is related to the preceding part of a story. Alternate translation: [Now]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

in the temple

Only priests were allowed to enter the temple building, so Luke means that Jesus was teaching in the temple courtyard. Luke is using the word for the entire building to refer to one part of it. Alternate translation: [in the temple courtyard]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἦν Δέ τάς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τάς δέ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τό ὄρος τό καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [the hill that people call Olivet]

Note 4 topic: translate-names

τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἦν Δέ τάς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τάς δέ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τό ὄρος τό καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν)

You could also translate this entire expression as a proper name. Olivet is the name of a hill or mountain. See how you translated it in [19:29](../19/29.md). Alternate translation: [the Mount of Olives] or [Olive Tree Mountain]
