SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:25a

There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars,

There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars: The word signs here refers to unusual and significant sights or events that will happen to the sun, moon, and stars. These signs will indicate that God will soon do something very important. The text implies that the signs will cause people to be afraid. For more information, see the note on “sign” in 21:7b.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

Miraculous signs will occur in the sun, moon, and stars. (GW)

Strange things will happen to the sun, moon, and stars. (CEV)

The parallel passages in Matthew 24:29 and Mark 13:24–25 say that the sun and moon will become dark and the stars will fall from the sky. See also Isaiah 34:4 and Joel 2:30–31.

21:25b

and on the earth dismay among the nations,

and on the earth: The phrase on the earth refers to the whole earth, the world in general.

dismay among the nations: This phrase uses an ellipsis. The words “will be” are implied from 21:25a. For example:

and on the earth dismay will be among the nations…

The Greek word that the BSB translates as nations is the same word that it translated as “nations” in 21:24b and “Gentiles” in 21:24c–d. Here it refers to the people in these countries all around the world.

21:25c

bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves.

bewildered: The Greek words that the BSB translates as bewildered refers to being severely anxious, distressed, and confused. This type of anxiety is often caused when a person does not know how to overcome a situation or danger. In this context people will feel helpless in their anguish and fear because they will not know what to do.

Some ways to translate bewildered are:

deeply troubled and confused (GW)

they won’t know what to do (CEV)

perplexed (NLT)

by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves gives the reason why people will be perplexed and anxious. The sea will be making loud noises, and there will be high waves on its surface. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

because of the roaring and tossing of the sea (GW)

over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves (NET)

not knowing which way to turn from the roar and surge of the sea (REB)

In some languages it may be necessary to translate roaring and surging as main verbs and say, for example:

at the way the sea roars and its waves toss/crash

roaring: The Greek word that the BSB translates as roaring refers to the loud sound that the sea makes during a storm. Other ways to translate this word are:

loud noise

thunderous roar

loud crashing sound

surging: The Greek word that the BSB translates as surging refers to the movement of the sea during a storm. It refers to the waves made by the wind. other ways to translate this word are:

big pounding waves

surging waves

In some languages it may be necessary to translate the word surging with a phrase such as:

how the sea/water rises and falls

Refer to this action in a natural way in your language. In some languages there may be an idiom to express it.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καί σελήνῃ καί ἄστροις καί ἐπί τῆς γῆς συνοχή ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καί σάλου)

As in [21:10](../21/10.md), the term nations here refers to the people of one nationality or ethnic group. Alternate translation: [the people of the nations will be distressed]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου

in with perplexity ˱of˲_˓the˒_sound ˱of˲_˓the˒_sea (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καί σελήνῃ καί ἄστροις καί ἐπί τῆς γῆς συνοχή ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καί σάλου)

These storms could be literal. Jesus may be saying that there will be larger and more frequent hurricanes at this time. However, they could also be figurative. Jesus may be using the image of being in a storm at sea to portray how the people will feel about what they are experiencing. You could represent this possible metaphor as a simile in your translation. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [They will be as anxious as they would be in a great storm at sea]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου

˱of˲_˓the˒_sound ˱of˲_˓the˒_sea (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καί σελήνῃ καί ἄστροις καί ἐπί τῆς γῆς συνοχή ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καί σάλου)

Jesus may be using the words roaring and tossing together to depict a great storm in the ocean, whose waves would rise up high and make loud sounds. If you decide to retain the metaphor in your translation, you could translate these words with a single expression. Alternate translation: [about the great storms at sea]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:25 The prophets predicted that heavenly signs would precede the judgment of God at the end of the age (Isa 13:9-10; 34:4; Jer 4:23, 28; Ezek 32:7-8; Joel 2:10, 30-31; cp. Rev 6:13-14; 8:10; 9:1; 12:13; 15:1).

OET (OET-LV)And there_will_be signs in the_sun, and moon, and stars, and anguish of_nations on the earth, with perplexity of_the_sound of_the_sea and surf,

OET (OET-RV)There’ll be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and anguish in countries around the world as they’re puzzled by the noise of the sea and surf.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
