BrTrTherefore say, Thus saith the Lord; Shall it prosper? shall not the roots of her tender stem and her fruit be blighted? yea, all her early shoots shall be dried up, and that not by a mighty arm, nor by many people, to tear her up from her roots.

ULTSay to the people, ‘The Lord Yahweh says this: Will it prosper?
⇔ Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers, and all its fresh growth will wither?
⇔ No strong arm or many people will be needed to pull it out by its roots.

USTThen after you have told that to the people, say to them, ‘This is what Yahweh the Lord says: That vine will certainly not remain healthy. It will be pulled up by its roots by the eagle that planted it, and all its fruit will be stripped off and its leaves will wither. And it will not need someone with strong arms or many people to pull it out by its roots.

BSB  § So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:
 ⇔ ‘Will it flourish?
⇔ Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit
 ⇔ so that it shrivels?
⇔ All its foliage will wither!
⇔ It will not take a strong arm or many people
⇔ to pull it up by its roots.

OEBSay thou, ’Thus saith Jehovah: "Shall it prosper? Shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit; so that all its sprouting leaves shall wither? Will he not come with a strong arm and much people to pluck it upk from its roots.

WEBBE“Say, ‘The Lord GOD says: “Will it prosper? Won’t he pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, that it may wither, that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? It can’t be raised from its roots by a strong arm or many people.

WMBB (Same as above)

NET“‘Say to them: This is what the sovereign Lord says:
 ⇔ “‘Will it prosper?
⇔ Will he not rip out its roots
⇔ and cause its fruit to rot and wither?
⇔ All its foliage will wither.
⇔ No strong arm or large army
⇔ will be needed to pull it out by its roots.

LSVSay, Thus said Lord YHWH: It prospers—does he not draw out its roots,
And cut off its fruit, and it is withered? [In] all the leaves of its springing it withers,
And not by great strength, or by numerous people,
To lift it up by its roots.

FBVSo you tell them this is what the Lord God says: ‘Will it grow well? Won't it be uprooted and its fruit ripped off so that it withers? All its leaves will dry up. You wouldn't need strong arms or lots of people to pull it up by its roots.

T4TThen after you have told that to the people, say to them, ‘This is what Yahweh the Lord says: That vine will certainly not [RHQ] remain healthy/productive. It will be [RHQ] pulled up by its roots by the eagle that planted it, and all its fruit will be stripped off and its leaves will wither. And it will not need someone with strong arms or many people to pull it out by its roots.

LEBSay, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Will it prosper? Will he not tear out its roots, and will he not make its fruit scaly, and it will wither, and all of the freshness of its vegetation will dry up? And to lift it from its roots will not require great strength or many people.[fn]

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:1-24 This chapter uses a riddle, a form of metaphorical speech that both conceals and reveals. It is also a fable, a story that communicates a moral message about humans by transposing it into the world of plants and animals. The imaginative context creates a distance between the story and the reality and thus disarms the hearer’s defenses against an unpalatable message.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Will it prosper?

(Some words not found in UHB: say thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD thrive am=not DOM roots,its pull_up and=DOM fruit,its cut_off and,withers all/each/any/every fresh leaves,its wither and=not in/on/at/with,strength great and,in/on/at/with,people many to,pull DOM,it from,roots,its )

Yahweh asks this as a leading question to emphasize the negative answer. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “It will not prosper.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers, and all its fresh growth will wither?

(Some words not found in UHB: say thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD thrive am=not DOM roots,its pull_up and=DOM fruit,its cut_off and,withers all/each/any/every fresh leaves,its wither and=not in/on/at/with,strength great and,in/on/at/with,people many to,pull DOM,it from,roots,its )

Yahweh asks this rhetorical question to emphasize that the vine will certainly be judged. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. It can also be stated in active form. Alternate translation: “Someone will pull up its roots and pluck out its fruit so all of its growth of leaves will wither away.” (See also: figs-activepassive)

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) No strong arm or many people will be needed to pull it out

(Some words not found in UHB: say thus he/it_had_said my=master GOD thrive am=not DOM roots,its pull_up and=DOM fruit,its cut_off and,withers all/each/any/every fresh leaves,its wither and=not in/on/at/with,strength great and,in/on/at/with,people many to,pull DOM,it from,roots,its )

The phrase “strong arm” represents a strong person. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “There will be no need for a strong person or many people to pull it out” (See also: figs-activepassive)
