Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

12:50 ου ¦ οτου CT
Key for above GNTs: yellow:punctuation differs, red:words differ (from our SR-GNT base).
12:50 a terrible baptism of suffering: God’s judgment is often pictured as an overwhelming flood (Pss 18:4; 42:7; 69:1-2; Isa 8:7-8; 30:27-28; Jon 2:5).
In this section Jesus was still talking to his disciples. He told them that a difficult time was coming. He warned them that in many families, some family members would follow him and some would not. This would cause family members to disagree and separate.
Some other headings for this section are:
Jesus Causes Division (NCV)
Not Peace but Division (NIV)
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 10:34–36.
But I have a baptism to undergo,
But first I must be baptized with suffering and death,
But before that happens I must suffer and die,
But: The Greek word that the BSB translates as But here introduces something that had to take place before the wish in the previous verse part could be fulfilled. It is not introducing a separate or contrasting idea.
I have a baptism to undergo: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as I have a baptism to undergo is literally “I have a baptism to be baptized with.” Some English versions, such as the RSV, translate it that way.
In this context, Luke used the Greek word baptism figuratively. It describes an experience that is overwhelming. In this context it refers to the terrible suffering that Jesus would endure. In some languages it may not be possible to use the same term that you used for baptism in water. Here are some other ways to translate in this context:
Use an expression that is similar to the one for baptism but does not necessarily require water. For example:
I must endure a purifying initiation
Use an expression that is similar to the one you used for baptism but make the meaning explicit. For example:
I must endure a purifying bath of suffering
I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me (NLT)
Translate the meaning without the figure of baptism. For example:
I must endure overwhelming agony
I am going to be put to a hard test (CEV)
See baptize, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.
and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
and I feel extreme pressure/stress until that is finished!
and I am very troubled/burdened until that has happened!
how distressed I am: The phrase how distressed I am expresses the mental and emotional stress/pressure and suffering that Jesus felt as he thought about his coming death on the cross. Other ways to translate this clause are:
I feel very troubled (NCV)
what stress I am under (NRSV)

δὲ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: βάπτισμα Δέ ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι καί πῶς συνέχομαι ἕως ὅτου τελεσθῇ)
Jesus uses the word But to indicate that he cannot do what the previous sentence describes until after he does what this sentence describes. Alternate translation: [But first]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
βάπτισμα & ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι
baptism & ˱I˲_˓am˒_having ˓to_be˒_baptized
Jesus speaks of baptism to describe how he must suffer. Just as water covers a person during baptism, suffering will overwhelm Jesus. Alternate translation: [I must be overwhelmed by suffering]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
βάπτισμα & ἔχω βαπτισθῆναι
baptism & ˱I˲_˓am˒_having ˓to_be˒_baptized
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [suffering must overwhelm me]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclamations
πῶς συνέχομαι ἕως ὅτου τελεσθῇ
how ˱I˲_˓am_being˒_pressed until ˱of˲_which ˱it˲_˓may_be˒_accomplished
This exclamation emphasizes how distressed Jesus is. Alternate translation: [I am terribly distressed and will continue to be distressed until my suffering is completed]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
πῶς συνέχομαι
how ˱I˲_˓am_being˒_pressed
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state what is doing the action. Alternate translation: [this suffering will continue to distress me terribly]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἕως ὅτου τελεσθῇ
until ˱of˲_which ˱it˲_˓may_be˒_accomplished
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [until I have endured all of it]
