Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

17:20-37 This is the first of two discourses in Luke’s Gospel on the coming of the Kingdom and the return of the Son of Man (see also ch 21).
The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.
Examples of headings for this section are:
Jesus taught about when the Son of Man will come
The coming of the Kingdom of God
Parallel passages are in Matthew 24:17–18, 24:23–28, 24:37–41, and Mark 13:14–16, 13:19–23.
For background, see Genesis chapters 6 and 7. During the time of Noah before the flood, people were busy living their normal lives. They were not thinking about God. Then God punished them with a flood. Only Noah and his family were prepared and survived the flood. The time before the Messiah returns will be similar in that way to the time of Noah. Most people will not be thinking about God. They will not know that he is about to punish them. You may also want to refer to the parallel verses in Matthew 24:37–39.
Just as it was in the days of Noah,
¶ “The situation in the time of Noah long ago
¶ “Before the flood came long ago when Noah was alive, people behaved
so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man:
is like the situation will be in the time of the Son of Man.
in the same way that people will behave just before I, the Son of Man, return.
Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man: This verse indicates that the time just before Jesus returns to earth in the future will be like the time of Noah. In the next verse Jesus explained in what way it will be like that time.
See the General Comment on 17:26a–b below for a suggestion about changing the order of clauses in this verse.
Just as it was…so also will it be: As the next verse makes clear, Jesus was comparing the way people behaved in the days of Noah and the way people will behave during the days of the Son of Man. In some languages it may be necessary to make the meaning more explicit. For example:
Just as people were acting/behaving…so they will act/behave
the days of Noah: The phrase the days of Noah refers to the time thousands of years ago when Noah lived. The context clarifies that it refers specifically to the time just before the flood occurred. You may need to refer to this time more specifically in your language. For example:
in the time of Noah long ago before the flood had occurred
the days of the Son of Man: The phrase the days of the Son of Man refers to the time period just before the Son of Man returns. See the note at 17:22a–b for suggestions on how to translate the phrase Son of Man.
In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of clauses in this verse. For example:
26bWhen the Son of Man comes again, 26athe situation will be like the time of Noah. (GW)

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί καθώς ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Νῶε οὕτως ἔσται καί ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου)
Alternate translation: [just as people were doing certain things … thus people will be doing the same things]
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Νῶε

Jesus is using the term days to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [at the time when Noah was living]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
