Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

12:15-21 This summary of Jesus’ ministry clarifies Jesus’ nature as the Messiah, the Servant of God who will bring salvation to the nations (see Isa 42:1-4).
About seven hundred years before Jesus was born, God told the prophet Isaiah that the Christ would be kind and gentle and would announce God’s way of saving people and making them righteous (Isaiah 42:1–4). And Jesus fulfilled that prophecy (12:17–21).
Here are some other possible headings for this section:
God’s Chosen Servant (NIV)
Jesus Is God’s Chosen Servant (NCV)
Jesus fulfilled what the prophet Isaiah had said
warning them not to make Him known.
He warned them not to tell others about him.
But he commanded them not to tell others the things that he had done.
He told them, “Do not tell anyone about me!”
warning them: The pronoun them probably refers to the people whom Jesus healed. It does not refer to everyone who followed him. In 8:4a and 9:30b, Jesus also commanded people whom he healed not to tell anyone what had happened.
not to make Him known: This phrase refers:
generally to spreading the news of his activities. Jesus did not want the people whom he healed to talk about his miracles and so make him famous. He did not want to encourage the Pharisees to try to kill him before it was time.
specifically to spreading the news of his identity. The Jews were expecting a Messiah who would deliver them from Rome. They did not yet understand what type of Messiah he really was. Jesus did not want them to spread false information.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
not to tell others about him (GNT)
not to tell anyone what he had done
not to tell who he was (NIV)
In some languages, it may be natural to translate this phrase as direct speech. For example:
“Do not tell anyone about me!”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations
αὐτοῖς ἵνα μὴ φανερὸν αὐτὸν ποιήσωσιν
˱to˲_them that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μή φανερόν αὐτόν ποιήσωσιν)
It may be more natural in your language to have a direct quotation here. Alternate translation: [them, “Do not make me known,“]
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns
αὐτοῖς ἵνα μὴ & ποιήσωσιν
˱to˲_them that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μή φανερόν αὐτόν ποιήσωσιν)
The pronoun them could refer to: (1) all the people who were following Jesus. Alternate translation: [all of them so that they might not make] (2) just the people whom he healed. Alternate translation: [those he had healed so that they might not make]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
μὴ φανερὸν αὐτὸν ποιήσωσιν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μή φανερόν αὐτόν ποιήσωσιν)
The phrase make him known refers to telling many people about him. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [they might not talk about him with many other people] or [they might not speak about him with everyone]
