OET (OET-LV)Him still speaking, see, a_ bright _cloud overshadowed them, and see, a_voice out_of the cloud saying:
This is the son of_me, the beloved in whom I_took_pleasure, be_hearing from_him.

OET (OET-RV)While he was still speaking, a bright cloud came over the top of them and wow, a voice came out of the cloud saying, “This is my dear son that I get great pleasure from. Just listen to him.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence -1) ἰδοὺ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔτι Αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδού νεφέλη φωτεινή ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καί ἰδού φωνή ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐστίν ὁ Υἱός μού ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν ᾧ ηὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ)

In both places, the word behold draws the attention of the audience and asks them to listen carefully. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express behold with a word or phrase that asks the audience to listen, or you could draw the audience’s attention in another way. Alternate translation: [it happened … then] or [suddenly … listen]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence -1) νεφέλη φωτεινὴ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔτι Αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδού νεφέλη φωτεινή ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καί ἰδού φωνή ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐστίν ὁ Υἱός μού ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν ᾧ ηὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ)

Here, a bright cloud is one that is white and reflects the light from the sun very strongly. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [a shining cloud] or [a very white cloud]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐπεσκίασεν

overshadowed

Matthew could be implying that: (1) the cloud enveloped or surrounded them. Alternate translation: [enveloped] or [surrounded] (2) the cloud cast a shadow on them. Alternate translation: [cast a shadow on]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

αὐτούς

them

The pronoun them could refer to: (1) the three disciples, Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Alternate translation: [them all] (2) just Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Alternate translation: [Jesus, Moses, and Elijah]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

φωνὴ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔτι Αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδού νεφέλη φωτεινή ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καί ἰδού φωνή ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐστίν ὁ Υἱός μού ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν ᾧ ηὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ)

Matthew is using voice to represent the person who is speaking, which is God the Father. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your culture or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [a person speaking] or [God the Father spoke]

Note 6 topic: writing-quotations

λέγουσα

saying

Consider natural ways of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation: [and it said]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱός μου, ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἔτι Αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδού νεφέλη φωτεινή ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς καί ἰδού φωνή ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐστίν ὁ Υἱός μού ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν ᾧ ηὐδόκησα ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ)

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

17:5 a bright cloud overshadowed them: Such an occurrence accompanied God’s presence among the ancient Israelites during Moses’ ministry (see Exod 24:15-18; 25:8; 29:45-46; 40:34-38).
• my dearly loved Son: The Father was confirming what Peter had previously affirmed (Matt 16:16-17).
• They should listen to him because Jesus is God’s Son, who, as a prophet, reveals God’s will (11:27; see Deut 18:15, 18; Acts 3:22-23; 7:37).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
