OET (OET-LV)Because_of this I_am_saying to_you_all, be_ not _worrying for_the life of_you_all, what you_all_may_eat or what you_all_may_drink, nor for_the body of_you_all what you_all_may_dress_in.
Not the life is more than the food, and the body than the clothing?

OET (OET-RV)So that’s why I’m telling you all not to worry about your worldly life—things like what you’ll eat or drink, or how you look and what you’ll wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

διὰ τοῦτο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Here, the phrase Because of this introduces a conclusion based on what Jesus said in the previous verse about how it is not possible to serve both God and wealth ([6:24](../06/24.md)). In this verse, Jesus says that this means that his disciples should not worry about even basic things required for living. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a conclusion or inference. Alternate translation: [So] or [Therefore,]

λέγω ὑμῖν, μὴ μεριμνᾶτε

˱I˲_˓am˒_saying ˱to˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Jesus uses the clause I say to you to emphasize what he is about to tell his disciples. Use a natural form in your language for emphasizing the truth and importance of a statement. Alternate translation: [I want you to know that you should not worry]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν & ἡ ψυχὴ

˱for˲_the life ˱of˲_you_all & the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of life, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [about being alive … being alive]

Note 3 topic: translate-textvariants

ἢ τί πίητε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Many ancient manuscripts read or what you might. The ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts do not include these words. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστι τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος?

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Jesus is using the question form to show that life and the body are more important than food and clothing. If you would not use the question form for this purpose in your language, you could translate this as a statement or an exclamation. Alternate translation: [Life is more than food, and the body, than clothing] or [Life is certainly more than food, and the body, than clothing!]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστι τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Here Jesus is making comparisons about value or importance. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [Is not life more valuable than food, and the body more valuable than clothing]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and is not the body more than clothing]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

τὸ σῶμα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διά τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μή μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε ἤ τί πίητε μηδέ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε Οὐχί ἡ ψυχή πλεῖον ἐστί τῆς τροφῆς καί τό σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος)

The word body represents bodies in general, not one particular body. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural expression. Alternate translation: [bodies]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:25-34 Jesus taught an anxiety-free existence of simple trust in God for provisions. Jesus’ disciples had abandoned all (4:18-22; 9:9; 10:5-14); Jesus gave them comforting reassurance that God would provide for their needs.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
