OET (OET-LV)I_regret if/because_that I_have_made_king DOM Shāʼūl as_king if/because he_has_turned_back from_following_me and_DOM instructions_of_my not he_has_carried_out and_it_glowed/burned to_Shəʼēl and_cried_out to YHWH all_of the_night.

OET (OET-RV)“I regret that I’ve appointed Sha’ul as king because he’s turned away from following me and hasn’t obeyed my instructions.” That really upset Shemuel and he cried out to Yahweh all night.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

נִחַ֗מְתִּי כִּֽי־הִמְלַ֤כְתִּי אֶת־שָׁאוּל֙ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי־שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת־דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים

I_sighed/regretted that/for/because/then/when I_made_king DOM Shāʼūl as,king that/for/because/then/when turned_back from,following,me and=DOM instructions_of,my not carried_out

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Because Saul has turned from after me and has not raised up my words, I regret that I have made him king]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת־דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים

turned_back from,following,me and=DOM instructions_of,my not carried_out

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. The first expresses the idea positively and the second expresses it negatively. If it would be clearer in your language, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [he has completely stopped obeying me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י

turned_back from,following,me

Yahweh is speaking as if Saul had been physically following him but had turned away. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [he has stopped obeying me]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְאֶת־דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים

and=DOM instructions_of,my not carried_out

Yahweh is speaking as if his words were objects that Saul could have raised up. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and has not accomplished what I told him to do]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיִּ֨חַר֙ לִשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל

and=it_glowed/burned to,Samuel

The author is using a common expression of his culture that describes a person becoming extremely angry. Your culture may also associate anger with heat or with some other phenomenon, and if so, you could use its characteristic expression in your translation. You could also use plain language. See how you translated the similar expression in [11:6](../11/06.md). Alternate translation: [And Samuel became very angry]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:1-35 After Saul failed to obey God and completely destroy the Amalekites, God rejected him in even stronger terms than before (cp. 13:8-14).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
